My husband and I went to Cuffie River as part of a birding trip package that started at Asa Wright Nature lodge and went on for three days at Cuffie River. While Asa Wright was very special as a well-known birding mecca, Cuffie River was more like a hidden gem.
We were in a group of 13. We were given very nice large rooms with two double beds in each room, a large bath, and a private terrace or balcony. Everything was very clean and we were amazed that all the rooms were left wide open on the balcony sides to catch the breezes. It was very safe.
Regina, the owner/manager/chef was delightful; her cuisine was excellent! We had something like 6 meals there (in addition to breakfasts) and she never repeated herself. Dishes were many, flavors were subtle and distinctive and she seemed to take delight in amazing us with her versatility.
There is a nice, open air swimming pool surrounded by a raised terrace from which one can sit and observe the birds flying by and landing in nearby trees: flocks of squawking parrots and chachalacas; various humming birds coming to feeders, and others.
While we were there we had several arranged field trips--a stop on the way from the airport to see birds who make the local sewerage treatment plant their home--not at all "yucky!" and lots of birds; a long walk around the Cuffie River property to see the local flora and fauna, with Desmond, the local and expert guide to point everything out, and a trip to the west end of the island and out to Little Tobago island to see the sea birds. The day was rainy and the sea trip out there very choppy. If you do this bring your dramamine!)
In general this was a delightful, relaxing and delicious place to spend a few days.
