“Peaceful paradise”

We were lucky enough to book the nature walk and lunch at Cuffee River Nature Retreat, what a delight, from our arrival to our departure the atmosphere was nothing but a treat. Delightful hosts, the best food we found on Tobago and such a peaceful location, we had to drag ourselves away. A very special place.

The nature walk lasted approx 4 hours, this may have something to do with the torrential rain that day which meant we had to try and find shelter a couple of times, eventually we continued our walk but were very wet. Sensible shoes absolutely necessary and try to remember your binoculars, although Desmond the guide will have a pair to share with you.

If you like birdwatching, this location will guarantee you are entertained by the birdlife all day long.

“something like paradise”

What's extraordinary about Cuffie River is how different it is from the tourist world -- not only because of its immersion in nature, its amazing diversity of bird life, and its deliciously prepared local food, but also because of the loving care that Regina provides. Cuffie River is removed, 2.5 miles down a bouncy driveway and 30 mins from Scarborough; so unless you're content to wander the area on foot or be guided by the genial and knowledgeable Desmond, you'd better rent a car. But the inconvenience of location is well worth it since what this nature retreat offers is genuine as well as delightful. We stayed for 7 happy days, during which time we helped at least a dozen confused hummingbirds out of our room. We got quite good at it, and the hummingbirds seemed appreciative.

“Perfect tranquility, a birder's paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 November 2011

My spouse and I set out to stay here b/c we were told that a species of humming-bird known as the white-tailed sabre wing was coming to the feeders here. We had attempted to see and photograph this bird earlier this year in Tobago unsuccessfully.
During the first 15 mins of our arrival that very early morning we saw the elusive bird and already we were ecstatic we had chosen this place to stay. Breakfast was sorted for us and immediately we set up to start taking photos.
The peacefulness of the place is only disturbed by bird sounds and the sounds of the nearby river. There was only another couple staying which suited us just fine b/c quiet does not scare birds away.
The place is cozy. The service almost homely. The food is fantastic.
Kudos to Max who did the airport runs, Marina, Yvonne and Carolyn the latter two who do all the cooking and Desmond who is the guide and is a pleasure to speak with.
The pool is a salt-water pool and the deeper end goes to 9ft.
This hotel is located in a forested area. Therefore, if you do not like absolute quiet, if you wish to have an ocean view, if you wish to be able to walk to a shopping mall or party all night, this is definitely NOT the place for you. There are no TVs in the rooms. There are no A/C s but it is very cool at that altitude.
For me it was perfectly relaxing b/c it combined the absolute quiet with my birding hobby and also the next day we arranged with a tour guide, an experienced birder to pick us up and do an all day birding expedition.
Your options are to take full board with all meals which I would recommend b/c the location of the hotel makes it difficult to source your own meals unless you rent a venicle. And their cooking is good!

Room Tip: Rooms located on the upper floor are better

“Not all great”

We spent 3 days at Cuffie River in October of this year and while the resort is modern (yet rustic) we found the food to be over-priced and with no WIFI or TV in the room, we wondered what we were paying $240 US a night for. We were the only guests yet the "award-winning" guide on staff would have nothing to do with us since we didn't pay an additional $120 US for a "3 hour guided walk around the property"
At least at Asa Wright an introductory walk is included in the price.
I think they should be more forthcoming about what the meals actually cost, how about a menu we can choose from, i am a birder (and was there for the birds) and don't care about food all that much, my palate doesn't need to be challenged.
The location deep in the valley means it's impossible to go out unless you have a car by the way, so you are pretty much stuck with what they feed you.

Also, having a few hummingbird feeders up is not enough, the best places we went to put fruit out for the birds as well, we were less than overwhelmed by the variety of birds.

“Loved it - Tobago highlight”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 June 2011

This was the perfect antidote to the traffic, heat and noise of Trinidad! Admittedly it was especially quiet as we were the only guests (this being the rainy season) but I don't imagine that it gets noisy (apart from the parrots and chachalacas) at any time. If you want to relax, eat good food and 'commune with nature' this is the place for you.

Our 'executive' room was fantastic with lots of room for us to spread out in and a bed the size of the average hotel room. The bathroom was spacious and the shower large and with good pressure and plenty of hot water. No air-con but we had natural cooling from the open windows/French doors on 3 sides and a ceiling fan so it didn't get too hot. By the same token the rain didn't make it into the room when we had the inevitable downpours.

Special thanks to Marina for looking after us in her sister Regina's absence and organizing our trips and transfers etc. Our walks with Desmond were most enjoyable and informative, and we saw a lot more birds than we would have done on our own. And our tour of the island and visit to Little Tobago with Max was a definite highlight. Tobago is a beautiful island.
And thanks also to both our cooks who produced excellent meals for us. We never knew what we were getting, just that it would be really good and generally made from local ingredients.

On returning from a hot walk it was lovely to be able to jump into a cool (but not too cold) pool and then relax watching and listening to the birds. So many birds!
