Just had a one night break at this lovely hotel.
Easy to get to from the A1.
We originally booked this through Bookings.com but found a cheaper deal on the Best Western web site which included dinner.
After parking in the secure, gated car park we entered the hotel through the back entrance. This took us past the lovely leisure complex with a swimming pool, jaccuzi and steam room.
First impressions are ok, nice and clean but furniture in some areas looks a little 80's.The carpets in places were worn and could be a bit of a hazard. Lovely oak panelling.
The reception area was ok but again everything looked dated and not very welcoming. They had a couple of christmas trees, but there is something lacking that would make the place look warm and welcoming.
The staff however, are more than welcoming. Very efficient and pleasent.
Our room was on the ground floor looking out into the main street.
There was a smell of new paint which was very strong and the fumes lasted all night. I thought that it was our room but was told that it hadn't been re-furbished recently, that maybe it was the rooms above. It was quite over powering so I didn't get a good sleep because of it.
The room was spotless, lovely large bed with immaculate bedding (our pillows were useless though and made for a very restless night, along with the pain fumes).
As usual, my pet peeve with nearly every hotel is the throws and decorative cushions on the bed. Why don't they get laundered on a regular basis? These were cleaner than usual but were very smelly where others had used them. The wall lights at the side of the bed had had the wrong bulbs in at some time as there was a big burnt patch on both of the shades when we switched them on.
The carpet was nice and clean (again I have found this is another area that gets neglected in some hotels) and the furniture was dust free.
The bathroom was spotless with a lovely clean shower curtain, rubber bath mat and tiles. These areas are very important to me regarding cleanliness as they harbour so many germs.
The bathroom was however, in need of total refurbishment. Very dated tiles, that had been patched up in places. The mirror and shelving had been gloss painted badly. The bath is too short for a normal height person and too shallow, there is of course a shower which was nice and clean.
The restaurant staff are lovely and friendly, and very effficient.
We had afternoon tea in the lounge on our arrival. Reasonably priced, with 2 scones each and plenty of tea or coffee. Very nicely presented but again the lounge lacking any real ambiance.
For dinner we had the most wonderful lamb dishes, my only complaint was the vegetables were a little under cooked for my taste.
I had house wine by the glass which was very good (I'm no wine expert though) and very reasonably priced.
The desserts were tasty too.
Breakfast was very tasty. Everything freshly cooked and local produce, and a good sized portion. Served very quickly with as much toast, tea or coffee as you like by the lovely staff.
Our sleep wasn't too good due to the afore mentioned problems, but the beds were very comfortable.
The noise from the street wasn't as bad as we thought it was going to be considering it was a saturday night.
The problems I have mentioned are minor really. This was a good deal and what the hotel lacks in ambiance it more than makes up for in it's wonderful staff and excellent food.
We will be visiting again in the near future.
Room Tip: Don't be put off by the rooms on the main road, they're not as noisy as you would think.
