I have stayed at Serene 3 times now and every time I have been impressed with the service the quality of the rooms and the meals. The two pools are fantastic, but the beach is only a 5 minute walk away. Some great restaurants and markets in Kata itself as well.

The hotel is well situated about 5 minutes walk from Kata beach and quite a few decent dining options nearby.
Also you can get a tuk-tuk to nearby Kata Noi beach for 150 baht.Its about a couple of miles away but up a steep hill so walking not really recommended.
The Serene Resort has a decent pool and friendly staff.....rooms are reasonable.
For the location and the price its a good option in Kata.

This hotel should really be rated as 3 stars, but it's a good option if you don't mind the basic room. The pool is definitely the high point of the hotel. Another good point is the tour shop by the entrance, many options and fairly good price + very nice staff. The location is good, close enough to the beach and main street. Staff was average in my case, no issues but not so friendly either.

Just letting people know that the Serene Resort will be having major renovations going on between May - November. Resort will still be open but be warned of the possible inconvience. Not all agents are aware of this and it could mean a make or break hotel to some.
