My husband and I stayed here for 1 night on one of our trips around France. Our first impression was one of dread, the hotel is situated right next to a busy "N" road. However our fears were assuaged as all the rooms are situated away from the road and any traffic noise is minimal.
The Auberge is part of the Relais & Chateaux group and it’s restaurant has been awarded 1 michelin star. It is made up of small buildings built around lovely gardens and a pleasant outdoor swimming-pool.
Our greeting at reception was very cool and rather clinical. I found it odd that the porter rather than a member from reception took us to our room. This feeling was reinforced when I saw other customers, mainly French, being escorted to their rooms by reception personnel. Maybe they think the English don''t require the same level of service as our European friends!
The room was clean, spacious and comfortable with a large bed and bathroom.
After a very relaxing afternoon by the pool we headed into dinner. The lady maitre d' was lovely and offered us an English version of the menu. The choice was fantastic and the wine list incredible.
We both agreed the food was superb but the weakness was the service. At times it came close to being sloppy, for example bread not offered until well into the starter, no explanation of the food and we prefer the wine in the glass not on the table-cloth. We got the distinct impression the restaurant was a testing ground for junior waiters just out of training school. Not good enough in a 1 star establishment. If staff are going to comment or talk about customers then they should make sure they are out of ear shot of other customers.
Overall, we had an enjoyable stay but the jury is still out on whether we will return.
