my wife and i stayed at les templiers 40 years ago (when it had a 2 star michelin restaurant) and never forgot the experience. trying to recapture fond memories is always risky, but this time it worked. having traveled extensively throughout france many times, it seems to be that the closer one gets to paris, the cooler the reception and the stiffer the service. having toured the auvergne, the dordogne and the loire river valley on this trip before arriving at the auberge, this impression was reinforced at the auberge des templiers. our reception was cooler than we experienced elsewhere, but not to the point where it was off-putting. and, before dinner one evening, when we mentioned to the owners that we had visited 40 years ago, their warmth emerged and they couldn't have been nicer (including a gift of vintage champagne). the rooms seem to be a bit tired, it won't be long before a full-scale renovation will be in order, and the restaurant, while having lost a michelin star over the years, was delightful. the grounds are park-like ... lots of lawn, gardens and flowers ... very restful.
