If you think that your stay at a place called the ecolodge will be on par with a stay at the Hilton, you might need a reality check. An ecolodge would and should not encourage long showers with endless supplies of hot water, nor should they bother with septic tanks that can flush away toilet paper when the system they have work just fine.
I stayed for two nights with three other people, and it was fantastic. Right outside our balcony were palm trees and wonderful views, the staff was not always present but they were nice, colorful characters, and they always helped whenever we needed it.
Breakfast was fresh fruit and whatever else along with it (porridge, pancakes, toast, omelette, cereal), they mixed it up everyday I think. Really good anyhow!
Matthew is a forgetful but kind soul, and he and his mom work hard to keep this place running despite the recession which has hit the country really hard. To read people's complaints about the demand for no tissue in the toilet or cleaning only every five days says more about those people than the ecolodge itself, and its sad to see people look for something to harp in instead of seeing the beauty in a place like this.
My only advice would be to remind matthew several times if you need something from him, he has the memory of a goldfish. A very sweet goldfish, though.
Also, I must recommend the Hacienda 8a (www.hacienda8a.com) if you like horseback riding! It's 25 mins from the lodge by car, and juanma (our guide) will take great care of you no matter what your skills are. We were of all different levels and all of us were extremely pleased with the ride.
And they let you borrow helmets which is practically unheard of in this part of the world!
If I get to return to casa cubuy I'll consider myself lucky.

Casa Cubuy is a gorgeous bed and breakfast located in the mountains, right in the heart of the Rainforest. What a lovely lodge that was, with hammocks everywhere. They served fresh fruits for breakast! Love it! The host was very hospitable and understanding. And let us use the kitchen anytime of the day -- that was especially useful with a 2 year olds finicky eating habits. The best part was not just the view, but the private trail that took us to the amazing water falls and a tiny pool where we could swim and relax. The water, I think, has some amazing therapuetic effect. You feel really refreshed after a dip. That experience was just so divine. The water was pure and sparkling. The falls absolutely beautiful with green trees all around.

Casa Cubay is a unique experience, you are situated in the midst of the El Yunque rain forest. Amazing views from every direction and fun trails are all right there out the door. The trail leading down from the lodge is a fun rocky through the river type trail great for older kids. The other one follows the road through the rain forest.

Great breakfast, including lots of fruit is served "family style" exactly at 9AM. This forces you to sit with other guests and mingle whether one is in the mood for that or not.

There is a restaurant located down the road, owned by the same owners, but beware that it is not always open-depends on how many guests are in the lodge. The next closest place is a drive down the windy road. Bring your own snacks and food because there is no where else to eat. It would have been nice if there was hot water available for tea/coffee in the evening, being so remote with nothing nearby this would be a nice touch.

It can be chilly/wet, so be prepared with good hiking/muddy shoes and rain poncho etc.

We came here for a few nights after we had been in Puerto Rico for over a week already and decided that if we come back to Puerto Rico with our 10 year old son, we will spend our time between this ecolodge and the beaches/bio bay on Vieques. :-) The view was so incredibly beautiful- on the side of the mountain, looking out at the rest of the El Yunque forest. It was so peaceful, too, with the sound of the unique frogs they have there, chirping all night and the several hikes available from the lodge (they give full directions with a map and pics even- very nice and helpful). One of the biggest hikes we know our son will like is just 5 minutes down the hill from the lodge where we spent a couple hours watching the cascading water over many rocks/boulders and where we slipped into the natural swimming spot. We hiked further, crossing 2 of the rivers and running into a 3rd, and saw several other swimming areas as well, all within about a 30 min. hike. We took another few hour hike up the road that was the best hike I had in Puerto Rico (all the others were too hot for me on the north and west and south coasts- I got overheated a couple times and got eaten up on one with bites that itched for a week; speaking of, the frogs in El Yunque eat most of the mosquito larvae, no bites on that portion of the trip! Woohoo!).

I have to also mention the breakfast. I am vegetarian and gluten-free. Therefore, in most places that offer breakfast, I have to sit around and watch everyone else eat bagels and toast and cereal and meat dishes. The breakfast was heavenly at Casa Cubuy! There was fresh fruit (including grapefruit from a tree right outside the building) and yogurt and a delicious oatmeal (I had to take my husband's word on that). They also had hard-boiled eggs one morning, pancakes (again, had to take my husband's word they were yummy) another, and scrambled eggs another. They also always had a really delicious juice (we think passionfruit?).

Anyways, we were on our honeymoon and loved it! We can definitely see us taking our son and maybe even convince our parents to travel a bit, and take them there. It was a very wonderful part of the trip. We both highly recommend it.

Oh! I forgot, one of our favorite parts about the room was that the glass separating the porch from the room (we were on the top floor) could completely open. It was four panels that when spread out covered it, but without mosquitoes, we slid them all to the left and kept it open for the most part. Great way to feel like you're connected with the outdoors. We also had a little lizard that kept us company for all 3 days. It was great! If you go to El Yunque, you won't regret staying here. :-)
