“Perfect Stay”

My group from Philadelphia stayed here for three days and everyone loved this hotel. From the warm and generous welcome extended to us by the owner, Marie Paule, to the lovely, quiet rooms with views onto the beautiful vineyards of the Côte de Nuits. The reception area, with a cozy wood fire burning, is large and comfortable, the perfect place to unwind in the evening with a fine bottle of wine (the hotel’s wine list features magnificent bottles from Gevrey Chambertin and the immediate surroundings). Breakfast is generous, diverse, and delicious, with homemade jams and a fine selection of cheeses and charcuterie (not to speak of the local fresh baked goods). From the hotel, it is only a five-minute walk to the center of town where you can find a good variety of restaurants (we liked the excellent and fairly priced Chez Guy). When the group did not feel like going out in the evening, Marie Paule allowed us to use the breakfast room as a picnic area, a kind gesture we appreciated a lot. If you travel in the Côte d’Or area, I most highly recommend this hotel.

Stayed 2 nights at Les Grand Crus as part of a wine tour in Burgundy. Very friendly and helpful staff, and a splendid view over the famous vineyards from my room (23). Breakfast buffet included delicious home-made jams, fresh every day. Highly recommended!

“Lovely hotel”

We stayed here for one night as a stopover in a drive across France, and wished we could have stayed longer, both to see more of the region around Dijon and to enjoy the hotel, which was delightfully decorated.

Location: Other reviews have commented that the hotel was easy to find - we actually found it quite difficult, partly I think because we weren't coming from the Paris direction like most people would be, and partly because it was further out of Dijon than we expected - about a 20 minute drive from the centre of town.

Food: The hotel did not provide breakfast (we bought food at the supermarket down the road), and arriving at 7pm on a Friday night we were unprepared to find dinner. I would definitely recommend planning ahead and booking somewhere if you'll be arriving late in the day; we had trouble finding restaurants that were open, even having driven back to the centre of town.

Accommodation: The rooms were lovely, decorated in a traditional style with nice pieces of furniture, very clean and the facilities are a cut above what would expect for this price (especially the bathroom, although there is no shower, just one of those hand-held sprayers).

However, the walls are very thin and I was woken early in the morning by people in the next room talking.

  • Liked — Decor in the rooms
  • Disliked — Thin walls - quite noisy

“Short stay in Gevrey-Chambertin”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2007

We wanted to stay in a wine village in the Burgundy region and based on our experience and the other hotels that we saw in the area, think that the hotel Les Grands Crus is the best option.

The hotel is easy to find, just follow the signs from the very busy D974 road that runs from Dijon to Nuits-St-Georges. Our first impressions were very favourable - a simple, modern building, adequate and very clean parking area. We were shown without formality to our first floor room, the most expensive of two types available. It was basically furnished but bright, with a tiny bathroom (one of those angled baths that you can just about sit up in). However the main feature was a large window that opened over a small vineyard - we could almost pick the grapes.

The hotel does not have a restaurant but does offer a buffet breakfast in a pleasant room. There is a large unsheltered terrace but this was not in use during our stay, apart from as a meeting area for a large tour group. The hotel's website shows a pleasant looking lounge area, but this is in fact part of the ground floor reception area and is watched over by whoever is on duty at reception (they always looked rather bored) and so not very relaxing.

Gevrey-Chambertin is a pleasant little village and of great interest to anyone who likes wine - during our stay the main harvest had started and we were fascinated by the constant procession of tractors and being able to peek into courtyards where the grapes were being processed.

Although the village has 5 or 6 restaurants, beware that if you are there on Sundays or Mondays only 1 or 2 are open - as we found out! It is essential to book any night of the week. We enjoyed Chez Guy on the main square. Surprisingly we only found one bar in Gevrey despite its wine credentials, so struggled to find somewhere just to sit for a drink or a coffee as the one bar was constantly full.

On our travels around Gevrey we noticed several other hotels that we had considered - Le Richebourg at Vougeot; Paulands at Corton - and these were sited along the very busy and noisy main road. All in all Les Grands Crus at Gevrey is a good choice for a short stay but would benefit from a bit more luxury. It's reasonable value though.

  • Liked — Quiet location with views over the vineyards
  • Disliked — Indoor and outdoor relaxing spaces either unwelcoming or unavailable

“Wonderful hotel in the midst of the Burgundy wine region”

Les Grands Crus was an unexpected find for us. We have traveled throughout much of Burgundy, and on our last visit found this charming hotel. Our room was simply, but well, decorated, and was perfectly clean. The location is easy to find, as it is on the Route des Grands Crus, as you enter Gevrey from Dijon. You can walk through the village, from the hotel, in 10 minutes, or you can drive to Dijon or Beaune in 20 minutes. The hotel breakfast was good, though a bit expensive. We will certainly return here when our travels again take us to Burgundy.
