“What a find!”

We were at Xamach Dos for a few days around the end of January and can’t say enough positive things about the experience. We’d actually booked a week at Los Lirios in Tulum, which was adequate, but maybe more typical of the accommodations available in the area. Fortunately, we ventured south on the dirt road through Sian Ka’an (be aware, the road was much worse than you can imagine, but it’s well worth the trip!), and eventually stumbled upon Dan, his daughter Michelle and their little paradise. Immediately felt at home, hit it off with everyone, including the other guests and, after several beers, apparently way too much tequila and a lot of “oar” guitar (for which we actually have a huge talent, who knew?), ended up spending the night in one of the cabanas. The cabanas are all really awesome and Dan has added his personal touch with his paintings and creations of driftwood, conch shells, coral, etc. Having had such a really great time, we drove back to Tulum only after having booked the tree house for later in the week and returned later to spend the last 2 days of our vacation in Xamach Dos. I have to say, the food was very, very good; I could have eaten the jerk seasoned chicken wings all night and the chicken mole was truly a religious experience. We took kayaks out to the reef for some snorkeling, explored their own hidden Mayan ruins, played some coconut bocce ball, laid around in hammocks, played Scrabble with Dan and ate & drank to our hearts’ content the entire time. I mean, can it get any better?!! Dan and Michelle were gracious hosts and really made our vacation.

Be forewarned, you two, we’ll be back!

Do not be put off by the road as it is well worth the effort to arrive at Xamach Dos. Dan and daughter are friendly and look after you well. Most of the accommodation has been built by Dan and where i stayed in Casa Secreta, it was just perfect. Awesome spot. Miles of beach and learnt to play coconut bocce ball but Dan is definetly the best at that game. I had fun and met some nice people

Xamach Dos
Getting there ~ after you pass through the arch into the Sian Kaan reserve, you leave the Boca Paila Road and begin a 32 km journey on the “coconut road” – it will challenge your patience, surprise you, but in the end deliver you to a most worthy destination. Remember – take it slow, take it easy – you’ll get there!
Being there ~ upon arrival we were greeted warmly by Dan, the owner, and Shelley, his daughter and manager. I am not talking just a handshake and a smile but warm, welcoming hugs. We arrived in the evening and after our bags were carried to our cabanas, were immediately engulfed by the warm breeze, the smell and sounds of the beach, and the most amazing smells coming from the kitchen. We enjoyed a most delicious repast prepared by Francisca, one of many amazing meals! The first shot of tequila was on the house and we proceeded to celebrate our arrival. In the morning, the full impact of this haven swept over us. Dan’s artistic flair was displayed in each cabana, the restaurant and the surrounding area; lovely colorful hammocks floated in the breeze; driftwood and shell mobiles adorned the restaurant. Sunrise was serene. Birds overhead. We had indeed entered a paradise. I won’t go into all the details of our seven day stay (swimming, walks, kayaking, snorkeling, eating (we really wanted to take Francesca home with us), coconut boche ball, sleeping, reading, laughing, celebrating) - - everyone needs to experience Xamach Dos on their own. You are treated as honored guests, but are made to feel like family. Venenzio’s warm smile and gentle laugh; Francisca’s magic in the kitchen; Dan and Shelley’s vibrant and warm hearts and knowledge of the area – and Pinky!
Leaving ~ I don’t think you ever truly leave Xamach Dos – nor does it leave you!
One last note: Returning to work, regaling my coworkers with vacation tales, I was inevitably asked, did you feel safe? Was it safe? My response – it might actually be the safest place on earth!

“Home away from home. Remote. Paradise.”

After about an hour and a half on a BUMPY road from the south beach of Tulum with its hotels, restaurants and yoga gurus, we arrived dusty and thirsty at the Xamach Dos. We were greeted by american owner Dan (later known as Driftwood Dan) and his daughter Michelle. A welcome-shot of tequila later we were laughing with them and about this place. We couldn't believe our luck. This place is possibly not for everyone - but for us and I guess most people who venture out here, it's perfect.

There's not a single neighbour around (and no yoga classes, shamans or hip hotels). There are maximum around 10 guests at the same time, and you'll probably like the other guests, because they too went out of their way to get here. There are multiple colourful hammocks in palmtrees. There is the endless BEACH with large flocks of big beautiful birds above. Sea kayaks and snorkeling gear to grab when you feel like it (bring your own mask if you can, theirs are worn out), and a coral reef a ten minute kayak ride out from the beach. And bring fishing gear!

ROOM: we stayed in the ridiculously romantic Treetop Cabana. It has a large comfy bed, a beautiful palapa roof and those driftwood details and conch shells everywhere. "Rustic" I believe is the word they use for cabanas like this. Check out my pictures. There is a funny blue mosaic bathtub (who would ever try to use it?). The water pressure is ok, lots of warm water for showers. And the view... You can see the sunrise from bed.

FOOD: The whole experience was one of being welcomed into a family, and that goes for the food too. There is no menu (bliss!). You sit down with the whole Xamach family, everyone at a long ugly plastic Corona table (no, not hip, just unpretentious) and have a beer while waiting for Francisca or Laura to finish food which is home made, simple and always great. Oh, that chili salsa... And those breakfast banana pancakes...

OVERALL IMPRESSION: This is a true getaway. No room service, no unnecessary change of towels, no neighbours, no other tourists, no nightlife (though Michelle makes the best margaritas!!). Very welcoming. We felt as if we were visiting american relatives in their summer house; the kind of relatives that take great care of you and understand when you need to be left alone - and when you feel like som coconut bocce ball...

SO: thank you State Gouvernment for not taking care of the road! Otherwise this pristine streach of beach would probably be full of hotels, even though it's in the middle of the biosphere.

“Great place, pity about the road!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

This is a beautiful, secluded place: great accommodation, mostly hand built by Dan, the American owner. It's right on the beach, and you can choose from different sorts of accommodation, from the tiny, hidden "Casa Secreta" to the hut on stilts "Tree House" as you might expect) with a fantastic view - the most popular choice apparently. There is nothing to do but chill out, which was just as well, if like us, you've flown into Cancun from Paris, met up with your American friends, and then driven for hours (the last bit a complete nightmare in the dark, on a road that is apparently better than it was). Top tip, do it in daylight, preferably not jet lagged, and then it will seem like more fun! Dan and his local staff are welcoming and hardworking, spending hours cleaning up the beach which gets covered in rubbish, mostly from cruise ships, it seems. Accommodations are clean but basic, but there is everything you need for sitting on the beach. Food is a bit basic, and our American friends thought there should be more of it; it would be nice to be offered a pudding or a starter at dinner. But breakfast was good and the banana pancakes first class! I don't think the owner is making a lot of money, given his position at the end of that road. You can hire the whole place to have for yourself if necessary, which would be great for a family reunion or a load of friends. Take a torch - it all runs on solar power! We would love to go back, now that we know just how long it takes to get down the road.

Room Tip: Treetop for that authentic desert island feeling!
