“Extremely relaxing and friendly”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 May 2012 NEW

I can imagine that this must have been a lovely old house, and the bold modern decor is not to my taste, but I had a delightful stay there last week and this is one of the few hotels I would return to, because it is in such a beautiful setting, so comfortable and welcoming and the staff are so friendly and helpful. It looks wonderfully grand when you draw up outside, but it has a very informal feel. You feel you have the place almost to yourself, except that whenever you need something someone appears immediately to help. The rooms are very very comfortable indeed - the family were in a range of them.
There is no pool, no tennis, and no deluxe mud bath spa (thank god) but for a super country house experience we paid not that much more than B&B prices, so I thought it was very good value.

“Wonderful! We will be back!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 May 2012

Just had a wonderful two night stay at Hammet House and didn't want to leave! We were upgraded to a Fabulous room (room 8) and fabulous it certainly was, with views over the front lawn of the house, an enormous bed, sofa and enough room to have held a party if we had wanted to share. Ren toiletries in the bathroom and tea pig teas and plunger coffee were also appreciated.
We enjoyed the quirky furnishings throughout the hotel although initially I wasn't quite sure about them. Had dinner in the bar both nights - excellent value for money and a good wine list - and the breakfasts set us up for the day very well. The welcome and friendliness from the staff made you feel that nothing was too much trouble.
We are hoping to come back for another short stay before too long - although I suspect they will be booked up well in advance as they get more publicity.

Room Tip: Go for a fabulous room - #8 if possible - well worth the extra cost

“An hotel which gives you that extra special something!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 May 2012

Hammet House is in a lovely little village called Llechyrd, and just over a bridge which overlooks the River Teifi (you have to see it really to appreciate its beauty!). There is a long drive leading up to Hammet House, there is plenty of parking and lots of grounds and walks locally.

The interior is very adventuous in that it is very retro modern mixed with traditional furniture (strangely it works very well). The Drawing room is very relaxing with comfortable sofas and retro furniture! This is a similar theme in the bar area. A very stylish hotel!

We had a Groupon voucher and were shown our room which was incredible. The room was 'Fabulous' (that is how they rate their rooms) and they were not exaggerating... it was fabulous. The room was huge with a large double bed and sofa with plenty of space in the room. The bed was very comfortable and both my partner and I had a very good sleep!

The bathroom was large with an L-shaped bath, strange but it seemed to work as it was hard to get out (not physically but because it was very relaxing). The complimentary bathroom products were Ren - 10/10!

The food was excellent. For breakfast on the first morning, we had smoked salmon & scrambled eggs with freshly squeezed orange juice and coffee - very tasty. On the second morning, we had a cooked breakfast which consisted of Welsh bacon, pork, garlic & juniper sausages, home made baked beans with chorizo sausage, eggs, tomatoes & mushrooms and then to finish the most delicious home-made pastries. We also stayed for dinner which had the wow-factor - definately worth eating at the hotel if you stay (we found the food at the local pub (The Carpenters Arms) dreadful, very bland with no taste).

The staff at the hotel are lovely, nothing is too much trouble. When we stayed they were getting themselves ready for a wedding and also had the BBC filming but we were treated as you would expect with the upmost attentiveness!

All-in-all, a very special place to go and we will certianly visit again and stay in Room 7 because it certainly was Fabulous!! Can't wait for September to see the BBC programme Summer in Wales about Hammet House.

Room Tip: There is a lovely walk along the river from the hotel to Cilgerran which is worth doing!

“Renovated but not sympathetically”

I stayed at this hotel several times when it was the old Castell Malgwyn and was pleased to be told I had been booked to stay there whilst attending a recent family wedding. However, I have to say that for me, the programme of much-needed renovations is just not hitting the right note. Whilst the hotel undoubtedly needed a facelift, there is a terrible hodge-podge of styles, many far too modern for this grand old Georgian building. I do wish the owners had chosen to restore and furnish the hotel in a completely period style rather than make a half-hearted stab at it. The bed in my room could have been designed by Ikea! That said, the service was good as was the food but the whole thing was a little tarnished by the jarring design styles.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for reviewing your recent stay with us at Hammet House. We were disappointed to hear that you were not a fan of our bold contemporary design scheme. The interior design of the house is pitched to honour the fabulous Georgian architecture & heritage of the house by juxtaposing it with the best in modern design classics. Hence you will find Egg chairs & Ghost chairs dotted around the place, lighting by DesignHeure & Kartell, pieces by Artifort & Slide, each piece has been chosen to echo & highlight the clean lines & formal symmetry of the Georgian architecture of the house.

I was surprised to read you likening the bed you slept in to furniture from Ikea. Whilst we are a fan of Ikea's affordable & fun designs for in the home, we certainly haven't used any their pieces within the house. Our new super king size beds were designed & made by hand from solid oak specially for us by Carl at Bugols of Narberth.

I was pleased to read you enjoyed the food & service at Hammet House, & we would very much welcome you back to enjoy these again.

Best regards,

Philippa Gale.

“Vibe calm, fire warm and food fabulous.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 May 2012

We were lucky enough to have fabulous few days at this wonderful hotel that is a project in progress (like so many historic restorations). The owners have been really bold and taken on an enormous task and for that, in the first instance, they should be commended. In a terribly difficult climate they are working really hard to bring people to a beautiful corner of Wales, so (without sounding patronising) well done!

From the moment we set foot in the house, the vibe was calm, the fire warm and the food fabulous. We were tired and strained and this hotel was just the tonic. As for the décor it was contemporary, but it actually (cleverly) drew your attention to the architectural features (like coving, windows, panelling) that might have been missed had it been cluttered with period touches.

Our room was on the renovation list, but the fact that it was cosy and the décor a bit twee didn’t matter a dot as this hotel has so much more going for it. I really didn’t notice as the towel/bed/Ren products and Teapigs were a major distraction.

The breakfast was marvellous. Fresh juice, local honey, crusty toast, amazing porridge, the list is endless. I overheard one lady saying that her cooked breakfast was the best she had ever tasted.

If I have one gripe it was the over-priced puddings, but even that didn’t leave me feeling miserable (and it would have in a lesser hotel).

I urge you to go, and enjoy what this ‘fabulous’ hotel has to offer and explore this beautiful part of West Wales.
