Sri Lanka, once called Serendib, meaning island of jewels, certainly lives up to its name at Spica Holiday Home in Kandy. 0n a return visit we recently spent 4 weeks enjoying the scenic beauty of both the country and the people, as well as the culture, food and of course the elephants. Basing ourselves at Spica Holiday Home in Kandy we enjoyed the hospitality and cuisine of our hosts Commander I.M.Tillekeratne, his wife Chitra and his driver Rodney, whose local knowledge and contacts made this a very special holiday.(we even stayed in a monastry normally not open to tourists) Thanks Rodney!!
The genuine hospitality and warmth of our hosts made Spica such a very special place to stay and we really did feel at home. Spica is large and spacious and much of the time we were the only guests to wander the grounds this delightful home during our stay. The meals were so good that we ate dinner there most of the time. We asked for Sri Lankan style and enjoyed an incredible diversity of rice and curries, fish, fresh fruits and the best buffalo curd and treacle.
Spica is only a short and interesting downhill walk to Kandy, passing local shops, schools and the ocassional elephant! The return uphill walk home was a good way to burn off a few extra calories, although an inexpensive R250 tuk tuk ride is always readily available. The views from the balcony of Spica are quite magnificent, and if you are lucky you will hear the distant chanting of the monks as you sip a gin and tonic in the early evening and contemplate yet another perfect day.
Spica is a wonderful spot to base a holiday in Sri Lanka, and Tillek can organise all your travel requirements. His driver Rodney has the most amazing number of contacts throughout the island, and knows the best routes to take to make sue you have the experience you want. We wanted to meet the locals and see the real Sri Lanka, and Rodney made sure we did, even organising a lunch overlooking a magnificent waterfall in a friends house and accommodation in a Monastry not usually open to tourists! Other special experiences were cocktails in the wild followed by an elephant safari in the Minneriya Sanctuary where we saw more than 200 elephants in their natural habitat; driving up north to Trincomalee Harbour, previously a war zone and now a picturesque coastal resort; enjoying the travel through the tea country; walking & climbing the 7400 feet ascent (5200 steps) to Adams Peak to see the Holy Footprint, photographing more waterfalls in one day than we thought possible;train travel and the annual Kandy Esala Perahera Festival with thousands of Kandyan dancers and over 80 elephants.
Serendipity.... Thank you Tillek, Chitra and Rodney !
We hope to return to Spica Holiday Home in 2012
