Every room in The Kandy House is unique, its theme and decor being based on an indigenous Sri Lankan butterfly. The rooms don't have numbers, they are named after these butterflies.
Our room was lovely, at the back of the hotel, and decorated in that wonderful rich turquoise color that only Sri Lanka and India can do without it looking like something Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen came up with on a bad acid trip.
The nub was that as we walked through the central courtyard, we got a glimpse of some of the other rooms. The Black Maharaja with its octagonal bathtub and the upstairs rooms with their large balconies were just too much of a temptation to turn down. We asked to pay for an upgraded room and the hotel owner very happily took us around and showed us every room that was vacant. When we chose our new room, with a beautiful four-poster bed, an enormous claw foot bathtub and separate shower, a lovely living room opening on to a large balcony with marble topped tables and just a quick walk to the pool, our luggage was very quickly moved and we settled in for what was a magical stay.
The pool here is amazing - a slightly odd shape, but SO big and SO deep. The chef prepares a new menu everyday and we found the food to be flawless. The lush green lawns with their white outdoor furniture just screams for a gin and tonic before dinner and my only regret is not taking the opportunity to try and play croquet on the lovely lawns. There are a number of Sri Lankan board games located at tables in the central courtyard. I was sitting down by myself at what seemed to be a table for mini-billiards and one of the hotel staff happily came over and taught me how to play the game and then patiently played the game with me for the best part of an hour.
Sri Lanka's boutique hôtels are probably the best value in the world. Of them, The Kandy House is in a league of its own.
