We had two nights at the Kandy House, and it was absolutely incredible.
We were welcomed into this opulent colonial home with a passion fruit cocktail, and immediately fell in love with the place. Most of the rooms are arranged around an open central courtyard, along colonnaded walkways. Downstairs is a bar area and an outside restaurant, again under a colonnaded terrace. The lighting is subtle, the decor tasteful - a blend of antiques and modern pieces - and the service impeccable. Gentle strains of music provided a relaxing backdrop.
Our room was beautiful. Not big, but beautiful. I think it was called the Cornelian. Lots of dark wood, a four-poster, big old wardrobe, and dark wood floorboards. The bathroom felt a bit Moroccan - tadelakt (polished plaster) in adobe colours, with two sinks and mirrors, a bath, and decent shower. We had our own terrace at the back.
Guests are provided with all manner of diversions, which is good when the weather is bad - drawing / painting kit, books, a lovely 'carob' table downstairs, magazines and so on. The pool is stunning - a huge kidney shape set in a lawn, overlooked by palm trees, with loungers and hammocks.
Dinner and cocktails on both nights were outstanding - top quality food, great service, and a lovely setting.
We had a massage on day 2 due to the weather, which was the only minor disappointment. The oldish chap who did it was very sweet, but the style of massage was a bit weird - a sort of random mix of light touches, strokes and rubs. It felt like the sort of massage you'd get from somebody self-taught. Personally, I could have done with a better, deeper tissue treatment. However...
Overall, an incredible place to stay worthy of its Mr and Mrs Smith recommendation. I wish we could have stayed longer, and I'd definitely go back. Highly recommended.
