“Good budget choice for families”

This was our cheapest ski-holiday ever, but also one of the better. Chamrousse is small, but very friendly and beautiful. Here are some tips:

- No complaints about the apartment, except that it was rather dusty. You might want to bring your own fitted sheets for the blankets.
- The small grocery store in the area was good, but you might want to bring things like dishwasher powder, some basic food products etc.
- The few restaurants/cafés in the area are pretty good (the big one by the pool is not so great, but ok).
- The ski-area is great for kids. You get a few really nice runs in all colors.
- Bring cash! Not a lot of cash machines.
- Snowtrex, which we booked through, have their own reception. They don't take credit cards and they are only open one hour per day. Not so impressed with their service.

Nice appartments, a bit small but aren't they all in France...? Everything was clean and complete. We especially liked to location, so close to the ski lift. We also enjoyed the ski area, perfect for families, with a mix of beginners and already more experienced skiers. There's also enough opportunity to ski between the trees. Slopes are wide and open.

“fantastic views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 July 2011

we have just got back from a 6 day stay at le domaine de l,arselle, we would a bit nervous after reading some of the reviews but on arrival we found our apartment clean and well equipped. The resort was fabulous and the area a hidden gem. The pool was clean and we were lucky enough to get good weather for most of our time there. What makes the resort is the magnificent view from the large balcony of our apartment.

the only down side was the length of time to check in, not enough staff on the saturday (three), but when we checked out the following friday there were 5 staff standing around with nothing to do, this is the reason i didn't give it 5 stars. Other than that a fantastic place.

“A superb value hidden gem of a family resort.”

Contrary to some of the other reports about the Domaine de l'Arselle my wife and I found the apartment very clean and the reception busy but efficient.

The apartments are reasonably well equipped if basic, but contain everything you would want for a skiing holiday, including separate loo and bathroom, satellite TV (inc BBC24). Ours was only 50 feet from the lift - the closest we've ever been.

The resort was bustling with skiers, but the pistes (which had really good snow unlike many Alps resorts this year - Chamrousse is a high resort) ) never seemed crowded, nor were there lift queues. Most of the lifts are new, and a new gondola (we think?) last year. Not many drags - we didn't need to use one all week. The men's (black) and women's (red) downhill runs (1968 Olympics) are well within the scope of an intermediates capability. The views are stunning - the whole of Grenoble lies below, with great vistas out to the heartland of France.

Chamrousse is obviously a family resort - no night clubs or late rowdy bars (thank goodness!). Lots of crocodiles of 'young experts' on the slopes made us laugh every day with their antics.

We found lots of good friendly restaurants - The Marmute (best for vin chaud), and L'ecuriel (best menu du jour) stand out.

We've skii'd all over Europe, The US and Canada. Chamrousse isn't a Whistler or Three Valleys, but it is the best family resort for a weeks skiing we've found.

“Bachat rip-off beware!”

Chamrousse is a lovely resort, quite and for the most part polite and very child friendly.
Apartments are basic, ours had dirty floors, other than that they were ok.
We had a generally good week bitterly spoilt by a meal in the Domain de l'Arselle "restaurant - Le Bachat"
After eating in there a couple of times tired a group meal, 6 adults 3 kids. We had to wait 45 mins for a seat, after booking to eat at 8:30pm, seated eventually at 9:15pm. One of the meals ordered was a meat dish which was so tough that it was very difficult to cut even with a steak knife!!! Waiter said don't pay once we complained about it, by then the kitchen was closed so no alternative food. The manager then overruled the waiter and added the price of the meal back on to the bill - after agreeing that it was too tough to eat!
We explained the food was too tough to eat, and the waiter had said don't pay the manager then called the police to force us to pay for one meal that we couldn't eat. (not good for a family group with kids aged 4, 11 and 15 yrs old)
Recommend you stay away, or try Club Sandwich restaurant instead (happy hour 5-7pm - Vin Chaud 1€, pizza's and roti chickens for take away too).
