“Perfect Anniversary Break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

Although we live within an hour's drive from the hotel, because of the snowy weather we decided to spend our anniversary at The Boar's Head. We couldn't have made a better choice. On arrival we were given an upgrade - though we know from past experience that all the rooms are comfortable and individual. All the staff were friendly, helpful and welcoming. The food is superb - an extensive menu with most of the food locally-sourced. The location is perfect. We obtained free tickets to the estate and enjoyed a walk in the grounds of Ripley Castle where we saw the deer. The hotel is on a good bus route to Harrogate and Ripon so it's easy to park up and take advantage of public transport to visit these interesting places. I thoroughly recommend it for a romantic or country break.

Room Tip: No bad rooms in my opinion

“A great little hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

I needed to stay overnight in the Harrogate area for work and booked a last minute deal at the Boars head (A short drive from Harrogate but avoid the school run times). All I can say is that I'm so glad I did. The staff are very friendly, John the waiter and the receptionist were a pleasure to chat with and they made me feel very welcome. The room was clean and pleasant and it was so nice not to be in 'chain hotel box'.
When I'm next in the area for business I would certainly stay again. In fact I'm tempted to visit when the weather is warmer to enjoy Harrogate as a tourist :)
The restaurant was quiet when I visited on Tuesday and I only had a main course which was nice and reasonably priced. All in all a nice find in Yorkshire.
FYI I would have marked as excellent but you have to leave something for them to aim for :) and I would have liked a bath but I would imagine other rooms have them and for the price and quality of the Boars head I can't be picky. Oh by the way.Very nice breakfast.

Room Tip: The room was so quiet I thought I had gone deaf. Park within the chains at the front of the hotel.

Thanks for posting a review after your first visit to The Boars Head.
Great to read that you are planning to come back and see us.Please do let us know that you would like a bath for your next visit and we will make sure you get one. Many of our rooms have both shower and bath but a few only have one or the other. We seem to be getting lots of very positive comments regarding the fact that we are very different from the chain hotels and that makes us very happy because we beleive what we are ,what we do and how we do it, sets us apart form the rest.
We will aim to get an "excellent" rating from you on your next stay,so please don't leave it too long before you come back and see us.

“What better way to see out the most depressing month of the year.”

I've always thought that people who post reviews on Tripadvisor are, well, a little bit sad, so what does this now make me? I was so impressed with my stay I've decided to break the habit of a lifetime.

Not so much a hotel, and definitely not a pub. More of a country house with guests, in a very good way, hence no reception desk.

Beautifully furnished, mainly with antiques and family portraits. (One of the advantages of being owned by a baronet!)

Comfortable rooms that are as far removed from a typical corporate chain room as it is possible to be. It is the little extras that elevate the good to the excellent, and the Boar's Head offers a good many extras, like local spa water, a cafetiere and real biscuits. (One silly reviewer seemed to think this was a bad thing.)

Excellent food, both for breakfast and dinner (especially for dinner).

Lovely village, and although easy to access by both private car and public transport, bypassed from the main trunk road.

I'm going to end with a suggestion. This being Yorkshire, where we don't just call a spade a spade, we call it a shovel, I would rename the brasserie as the restaurant, and the bistro as the bar.

Thanks for breaking the habit of a lifetime !!
We are all delighted that you enjoyed your recent stay with us so much that you felt compelled to post your first review.
Many of the things that you say you particularly enjoyed whilst with us actually read like a list of the things that we aim to deliver as our guest experience,so that is great news.." The little extras" that you refer to are often highlighted by lots of guests as making their stay a more memorable one, so I am pleased you appreciated them.It is very rewarding for the entire team to know that our guests have enjoyed their stay with us.Your comments will be shared with all the staff.
The Brasserie and Bistro have actually evolved from previously been known as The Restaurant and The Bar.This came about from guest feedback that "The Restaurant" created an image of a very formal dining experience, when we are aiming to deliver a more relaxed style and "The Bar" suggested an area where only drinks were served and food was not available. This how we have come to call them The Brasserie and The Bistro.
Many thanks for all of your comments and we look forward to welcoming you back again in the near future.

“A birthday treat for me and him, started golden then a bit tarnished...”

We are a mature couple on a short break, and picked the Boar's Head from a number of offers at this time of year. Wonderful village and a fabulous location for visiting Ripley Castle and walking round the deer park and grounds, for as far or as short a promenade as needed. Bitterly, cold we took the short version, then went back to the Boar's Head for an hot chocolate...

The receptionteam were quite welcoming, and we were shown all the rooms which were completely opposite to the huge unpersonal hotels around these days, and the maze of rooms at the hotel needed explanation! The bar was busy and felt very comfortable, with prices that didn't prompt a sharp intake of breath. Dinner was very good, slightly marred by waiting for our glass of wine beforehand and finding it was sitting on the table. I asked for a wine recommendation, which was good and the maitre d' was very helpful, and it did turn out to be the most expensive bottle on the menu - I hadn't seen the wine list as it was on the reverse side of the menu, my fault for not checking first. I sound cynical. We relaxed completely, reading books and newspapers after dinner in a comfortable drawing room with a warminglog fire, on a bitterly cold January evening. We slept like babies on beautifully laundered, crisp cotton sheets. Breakfast, sadly was the slightly sour note. We were "forgotten" by the waiter, and it took half an hour to get served, and the dishes were incorrect when they arrived. The poached eggs were slightly hard,so not the best note to leave on. On checking out, and being asked if all was okay, I mentioned the delay, and was told I should have mentioned it at the time! Well, yes I did, however, didn't have time to wait for it to be cooked again... Such a shame a most enjoyable break, became irritating. The team were very good, and don't be deterred from staying at this wonderful place, and I would always recommend the Boar's Head if anyone asked.

Room Tip: Dont forget to visit the castle - free tickets available to residents

“Delightful surprise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

We booked for just one night for a family occasion in Harrogate. We received a warm welcome which we were most grateful for as it was dark, cold and misty as we arrived after a long journey. The "Navy" and "Moreton" rooms were well presented and as comfortable as any we've stayed in. We had pre-booked a table in the restaurant and this turned out to be the right choice; the food was superb. The restaurant service complimented the food. Breakfast was also very good. We unfortunately had just an hour in the morning to use the free entry into the grounds of Ripley Castle. Even so the early morning sun and frosty ground created a beautiful scene across the deer park and lakes which was not to be missed. We will certainly return again for a longer stay.
