It was in Dec 2005 that we stayed at Hunas Falls for 3-nights. We had a booking through our travel agent and it was one of our best stays from check-in till check-out.
While waiting to be shifted to our room, we were served with a refreshing fresh fruit juice. the waiting lounge was small but cozy and gave a homely feeling. The room we were put up was on first floor, valley view. The balcony of our room opened on the beautifully laid out gardens. From the balcony we could see valleys and mountains far beyond and on the left was Hunas Falls mini Golf Course.
Our room was spacious, clean, furnished tastefully in warm tones keeping up with the chilli weather of mountains. Sri Lanka's famous brand DILMAH Tea & Coffee with a Kettle and water bottles were provided in the room complimentary. Bathroom was modern and fully equipped. Toiletries provided were of good quality. iron and ironing board were available in a separate room reserved for this purpose on the same floor.
The staff was always very helpful and took care of small details for example in the night after turning down the bed there were always sweets with a 'sleep well' or 'sweet dreams' card and a tiny flower placed on each of the pillows.
The rooms and the restaurants were located in two separate buildings connected with a hanging walkway. Breakfast was served in the Lakeview Restaurant in the connecting building and the lovely weather forced us to have our breakfast sitting out on the deck. The breakfast spread was quite elaborate and every item served was tasty, local and continental both. Talking about other meals, on our first night we had a-la-carte dinner at Lakeview Restaurant and what we ordered was delicious and the presentation could never have been better, it was of international standard. On the other evenings we made the most of the restaurant.
The hotel is surrounded by lush green jungle mountains and nature walks. There are several waterfalls and the one after which the hotel is named is just a little walk away. This waterfall along with others fall in the lake on the right side of the hotel. There is a dam on the lake and the cascading water makes this spot picture perfect. There's a small lake-house on the foot of the restaurant from where you can embark on the pedal boats, feed the fish with the leftover bread or just while away your time, appreciating the nature at it's full bloom, here at this place. The vegetation attracts lots of birds and butterflies which keep you mesmerized. A wooden bridge on the lake to take you to the other side gives an awesome and romantic look and the full moon only adds to the beauty of this place.
The hotel provides for many in-door and out-door games and a number of excursions. We tried our hand at Croquet which we played in the front lawn. My husband Ashraf took the full advantage of the mini Golf Course of Hunas. He took the golfing set from the club on rent (the rent of the set and the green fee were 1,000 Sri Lankan rupees which was quite reasonable). While he played, I walked with him admiring the nature and sipped Sri Lankan tea in one of the kiosks.
For shopping down town Kandy is heaven and I bought over a dozen of sarees from there.
Hunas Falls hotel is in Elkaduwa of Kandy district and only 26 km from the Temple of the Tooth. The road approaching to the hotel was in a bad shape that's why the drive from down town Kandy took one and a half hour to reach here. Apart from other facilities, the hotel has a helipad for the one in a rush.
We would definitely prefer staying at Hunas Falls if we get a chance gain. Loved it. On our return, we recommended this hotel to some of our colleagues and friends and whoever visited this place on our recommendation is full of praises.
Room Tip: Ask for valley view room.
