We stayed all inclusive with a 2 bedroomed suite, and for us it was the first time on a package for many years.
Good things: Fantastic staff, very friendly and helpful. Our room had a sea view which was great as we hadn't paid extra for it. We did have a problem with the first room but they moved us no problem. Beautiful setting, lovely gardens, easy to get to Rethymnon on the bus, which is a beautiful old town with lots to see. Evenings were spent either watching the entertainment (some of it wasn't our thing) or retiring to the bar for drinks and card games.
Not so good things: the food, whilst plentiful and reasonable quality for all inclusive (and the restaurant manager was really lovely), did get very samey after a while, although the kids loved it. We did try to go to local tavernas for a change of scene but sadly, they were all empty even in the height of the season; a local told us it had been like this ever since the all inclusive hotels started.
Our brochure (Olympic) said the hotel rooms all had satellite TV, which they did, but what they didn't tell us was that the only English channel was BBC world news! This wasn't a huge problem but was misleading from the brochure and we wanted our youngest to keep out of the sun during the afternoon and watching tv would have helped. There weren't a lot of activities for my 12 year old; again the brochure advertised all manner of activities, but really most of these were just external things which you could book through the front desk. Of those on site there was very little for older ones, eg the archery was for over 15's only which it didnt say in the brochure. The beach; under the underpass which was fine, and was very clean and sandy, the sea was crystal clear but the problem was the rocks and stones meant you couldnt walk into the sea and had to walk down the beach to the next hotel and try to blend in with their clients (tricky with an all inclusive wrist band on) so you could use their umbrellas (which were usually full). The brochure also promised water sports of which there were none. (we did go on a scuba diving trip which was fab). All in all I would recommend this lovely hotel in a beautiful setting with nice accommodation and staff, as long as you're not bothered about watching TV, going out in the evening or doing lots of watersports in the sea.
