Spent an enjoyable week at the Koukias, a friendly family run establishment just off the main junction in Troulos. The apartments were typically Greek, tiled floors, marble worktop and bold (maroon) bed covers and curtains and were spotlessly clean. The maids came in daily to empty the bins and mop out and changed the sheets/towels once during our week stay. The apartment is well equipped with cooking equipment including two hot rings, kettle, microwave & sandwich toaster, (although we ate out every night). The small TV has an English Euro New s channel but the rest were mainly Greek, and the air conditioning unit (45 Euros pw) was efficient.. The bathroom had a hairdryer and we never had a problem with no hot water although sometimes you had to run the shower for a bit before the heat came through which left us a little guilty wasting water. We had a ground floor apartment in the block to the rear of the property with the balcony/terrace overlooking a small tree shaded garden with fields beyond. Yes you will hear the donkey braying but usually only for 5 seconds and usually a few hours apart - we didn't hear him (?) or any dog barking in the night. The pool area was also spotless and a delight, plenty of sunbeds and huge umbrellas which may block other peoples sun if used when busy. The bar is friendly and comfortable and prices reasonable €2.50 for a draught 'pint'.
Troulos is a fairly quiet village with no obvious centre. There are sufficient tavernas to go to a different one each night for a week, with our favourite being Ratatouille, although we also enjoyed our food at Nectar & Ambrosia (more a formal restaurant), Vareli (beef madeira is recommended), Villa Roza and the pasta place on the main road. Tried the beach tavernas at lunch but wasn't as impressed. We were pleasantly surprised that the meals for two were generally around €30 for two courses and a litre of house wine - some places provide a free small dessert sampler to share. There is a sports bar Christakis which is at the end of the village (monastery road) and shows all football games on a variety of screens.
Getting the bus is easy along the south of the island, but on the two cloudier days we had we took to walking and reached the north side of the island via the monastery/dog shelter road in an hour and a half - steady uphill but not strenuous - couple of deserted beaches there. It's also not far to walk along to Koukanarias beach say 20 minutes to the start of the beach at the Skiathos Princess(?) hotel.
Couple of tips - you are told your room number on the transfer coach and you are left to find it (the key is left in the door). Rooms 1-8 are in the rear block behind Koukias House - ask in the bar for directions- we didn't and a group of us were walking around for a good few minutes trying to find our rooms. The return to the airport is unnecessarily early. Once you check in you can leave the airport - there is a taverna for that purpose at the airport entrance or it is just a 10/15 minute walk into Skiathos Town (take the road parallel to the runway and turn right at the end of the runway). We waited for the plane to come in literally 10 feet above your head before we returned to the small departure lounge and boarded without any waiting around.
