“Great Location - but Hotel could do even better”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 April 2010

Spend two weeks in Mandola Rosa during last September.

Location : great, directly at a beautiful long sandy beach, no crowds, shallow sea, absolutely stunning, a dream, one of the best beaches in Europe if you travel with kids. Do not go there if you want party night life. This is a place to get away from it all. Thus, most of the visitors were parents w/ small kids, older people, or couples who were happy with themselves. Positive : There are plenty of sunbeds around the pool and at the beach, no need to come early and reserve. Villa guests get a specific sort of beach cabana at their own, plus a small pool at their residence. Many guests from Germany and Russia.

Price and Room : We booked a villa, thrugh TUI, as it was significantly less than booking at the hotel directly. Still, with € 1,200 per villa and night (first week, still high season) pretty expensive, in the second week (after end of school holidays, lower season) price was "only" € 600 per night. But they took away our beach cabana in the second week - probably to justify the price difference. Be aware that when booking a "Villa Delos", you will book a villa which is faaaar away from the main building, much closer to the Thalasso building - which means that you will have to either walk 15 minutes one way each morning for your breakfast in the Mandola - or take your breakfast in the rather station-like restaurant of the Thalasso. The "Villa Iolas" villas are located around the Mandola main building, and have a wonderful sea view and pool, too. Interior of the villa was fine but not really luxurious.

Food : Breakfast in the Mandola Rosa was included and really great. We paid an additional amount for dinner - a big disappointment. In the first week (still high season) dinner price was € 70 pp, during the second week "only" € 51 pp. Both prices were way too high. For the price, you get either a buffet dinner in the Thalasso restaurant (food not great, but at least enough) or a 3-course menu in the Mandola restaurant "Cap Voyage" (portions so small that you left the table hungry). You could also eat a la carte; then they deducted € 15 from your amount if you had booked half board. Quite ridiculos! So easy to change € 70 for € 15 ! They also have an Asian restaurant, a la carte. Avoid! Food does not justify the price !

Service is mixed; sometimes excellent, sometimes improvable - note that a lot of their personnel are temporary workers from Eastern countries who do apparently not have a lot of experience with luxury hotels. Housekeeping was excellent.

Thus, a great place at a great location which still could do a lot better

“Do not waste your money and your holiday time”

I would just say all the bad reviews on the hotel below are all right and are really the true. What i regret is that I hoped for the best. But just don`t do that! We stayed at Villa Delos. It is a villa with 2 bedrooms, a living room with fireplace, working desk, dining table and a sofa with TV/ DVD set, the outdoor area has a little sofa, a dining table and 4 loungers by the private pool. It is ok for maximum 2 adults and 1 child, but be careful it is not child safe at all. The marble floors are really cold and slippery when wet, my 2 year old daughter fall down really often. The furniture is really poor, bathrooms.... I’ve seen public toilets better than this. Towels are all grey and the bed linen is torn, no cotton buds, no pads. Bed mattresses are all rubbish. They have slippers in one size only about 39. So my dear men be prepared and bring your own (remember the floors are real cold).
Beach... Fine, clear (but they use hotel guests to clean it), but the way back to villa is really hard. And i really hated when lots of people is passing through you from other 2 hotels, as Mandola Rosa is in the middle of OR Thallasso and OR Oasis. They're all looking at you... Well as my husband said we stayed at 5 star accommodation of the 4 star resort. Because the all 3 hotels share the services that are the same quality everywhere.
The food was all rubbish and it is all prepared from the frozen staff. And if you want some fresh fish or lobsters you have to pay a lot and sometimes pre-order it.
The resort is so far away from everywhere, the car rental recommended.
The Spa was ok, but the steam room in the men dressing room was broken for all 2 weeks we stayed. The greatest thing it has is a big pool, but you have to ask staff to switch some of the areas as some buttons are broken. Aurveda girls are always sleepy and yawning during the treatment.
Well, we had a good trip to zakinthos, the hotel arranged the yacht. I think it is the only thing that i liked.
We talked to one couple who stayed in other Grecotel Exclusive Resorts and they say that it is everywhere the same poor quality.
If you are reading this review try to avoid Grecotel when planning your trip to Greece.
PS I wanted to add some photos, i always do pictures of the hotel, rooms etc to show friends and everyone, but I didnt even want to make them in Mandola Rosa...

“Yes, it's expensive. But I like it”

I stayed there for 3 weeks first in Junior Suite and then in Villa.
Overall, it was a great experience:
1) I liked walking barefoot on grass stairway between the main building and the pool;
2) the hotel gives you one of the most wonderful sunset views;
3) hotel food was OK, it wasn't perfect but judging on my other food experience in Greece, it was fine although a bit too standard and boring;
4) personnel was very helpful and attentive. I don't mean that they were friendly chitchatters. I mean that when my wife caught some kind of local virus, the guest manager spent a whole day calling shrinks and pulling strings to get some help. I mean that when I complained to the manager that I did not like the rented car, the next morning she came up with the selection of replacements. I mean that whenever my kids spoiled or crashed anything in their posh 5 star building, the personnel never lost their smile and kind attitude. The cook from the local restaraunt gave my wife a receipe of the tomato soup - the only soup my kids are still eating with pleasure. The staff even tried to speak Russian to my kids - that was real fun for the kids. Thank you guys all if you read it.
4) the beach is absolutely great. it is at least 2.5 km long, white sand.

“Great Hotel- can't correlate any of bad reviews read”

We stayed at the Mandola Rosa for 5 days this August and had 2 junior suites as we had 4 kids in tow. Having read the reviews so far before going to the hotel, to be frank I was dreading it. There were a couple of really bad reviews. However when we got there we were really pampered from the moment we arrived. I think that although the views from the Junior suite are no great shakes-agree with previous reviewer that basically you get token views and rooftops of other villas- everything else was spot on. I think the decor, room size and fittings were very satisfactory and up to 5 star levels. I have been to top 5,6, and even 7 star hotels around the globe many times, and I think the hotel was up to speed. The food was very good at both the a la carte and buffet restaurant and the service was also excellent. Ok the buffet closing at 9:00 is rather daft, but the a la carte restaurant (which closes much later)on all the days we were there had tables available all the time. OK its not cheap, but do you expect from a 5 star restaurant. I think the beach area is wonderful, service from the beach area was prompt and courteous, and the kids loved the sandy beach. Overall I would have no hesitation in recommending the hotel, and will certainly be going back.

  • Liked — simple and clean
  • Disliked — perhaps a better mattress, but haven't found any hotel in the world with a better one than mine at home!

“Wonderful!”

My Family and I stayed at Mandola Rosa in July of 2006 for seven nights. We booked a villa with private pool and could not be happier with our experience. The food was perfect every day. We had room service as well as dinner at the restaurant, and breakfast every morning. Never once was the food over cooked! The staff was very polite and always smiling. The Villa was amazing and very clean! The pool was perfect for relaxing. The beach was amazing. The water was sooo clean and warm.
Overall this hotel is worth every star that it has. Will be returning again this year!
