A quick search of the Sawdays website for B&Bs near the Eden Project (my main destination for the weekend) came up with a list of six, of which three seemed to fit what I was looking for. I phoned all three and left messages to call me back if they had a vacancy for the following night. The first call back came from Hay Barton and I booked for two nights...arriving there the following evening at dusk. I am so pleased that I was able to stay there as I had the most relaxing and welcoming time. My room was large with a huge and very comfy double bed. The en-suite bathroom had a large roll top bath and an endless supply of hot water, a real indulgence compared to my usual brief showers at home. And so peaceful and quiet. The only sounds were those of the wind in the trees at night and a crowing cockeral in the morning. There are no TVs in the rooms (though there are radios) but there is a guest sitting room downstairs, with two large sofas, where (come late afternoon) you can munch your way through home made cake washed down with a pot of tea while watching TV or reading one of the many books available for guests.
Breakfast was a communal affair. As Hay Barton has only two rooms this was a great way to start the day by chatting to fellow guests around the large table. The food lived up to its billing and I managed to eat my way through crunchy granola and yogurt (both home made and delicious) with fresh fruit followed by eggs from the farm, bacon, sausages, tomatoes, mushrooms and toast. A pot of fresh coffee and selection of juices were available to wash this down. After that I didn't need lunch! The owners of Hay Barton are charming and hospitable and nothing was too much trouble. I would highly recommend this B&B to anyone and will most definately be making a return trip for some R&R and the chance to see some of the other gardens in the area. And although pets are not allowed in the house, I had my dog with me. She slept in the car but had the run of a 6 acre field so was more than happy with her stay too.
