“Could be the nicest hotel in Costa Rica”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

El tucano. The el tucano is an older property with natural hot springs. It is frequented by a lot of ticos very few foreigners. The property has stunning "bones" it could be a stunning property with it's mediteranian architecture and old growth forest but it is q good economy property for those that can't afford the expensize springs or tabacon.
Room came with a free breakfast pretty minimal but fruit coffee toast and scrabbled eggs. Dinner was not good.
Room was poorly lit had hard beds with cheap sheets and old bedspreads but was clean. TV with English channels. Bathroom serviceable.
The pools are not in perfect repair with a lot of broken tiles and old cheap plStic lounge chairs in disrepair and not nearly enough of them.  The pools themselves R great and they also have N excellent spa with professional therapists. $75 per hour.
So if they redid the bathrooms, got new lighting and bedclothes in the rooms and upgraded the TVs they could get $350 a night. If you can live with an older hotel with it's warts you can stay at a hot springs hotel for $100 or less per night.

“Tranquility at it's best!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2012

We drove from San Jose to the El Tucano Resort and found Eden! The grounds were unbelievably gorgeous. We checked in late in the evening and the staff allowed us to choose our room and showed us several rooms. Check in was smooth and the staff were very knowledgeable of the area. The rooms were in a simple Tico style, however met all of or needs sufficiently. The next morning we walked the Eden like grounds and had breakfast, which was included in the value priced room. The dining room staff made us feel like family and we grow to know them very well. By the end of the week we were invited to meet our waiters family. The food was simple and delicious. The on-site tour guide bent over backwards to answer any of our questions and gave great advise every time. The thermal pools were amazing and we invested several hours throughout the week in the pools. I also swam in the river that was also warmed by the volcanic heat as well. The city was about minutes from the resort. Not a long drive for being in Costa Rica, but a distance. We ate out every night in San Carlos and bought plenty of cerveza and Tico food in the grocery stores. This area of CR is not for the Gringo looking for an Americanized resort, but for those that want to be fully immersed in the Costa Rican culture. Again Eden is about the closest I can compare this hidden gem too!

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the grounds from the tree line.

“Nice place with friendly service.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2011

My husband and I stayed three nights at the hotel. This was too long as you are quite isolated here. The restaurant has a limited selection of menu choices. We longed for a local restaurant and a market to get less expensive water, wine, and beer as well as snacks. We did use the spa, which was very nice. We did not rent a car, which might have helped the feeling of isolation. This is not a bad place, probably the nicest around this area, but would only recommend a one or two night stay.

“Great spa experience at healing environs...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 November 2011

I returned after over 15 years to spend a weekend at HotelTucano. The Hotel is not anymore part of the Occidental chain, it is independent and ran by owners, who I met. There are visible improvements in infrastructure and service. The Thermae Spa is now very professional with top therapists & treatments and food at restaurant is great. Our welcome gift on the bed, was healing volcanic mud for personal face masks. After being pampered with warm and friendly service during a delicious lunch (my choice was buttered lemon marlin with almonds' crust and funghi rissotto) overlooking the thermal river, I was ready for a relaxing massage at Equilibrium Spa. My Therapist couldn't be better and then we plunge into the thermal pool of the spa surrounded by a lush rainforest. The thermal river flowing through the property provokes permanently a healing sensation. I loved this spa destination!
