This could easily be a much better spa resort with some upgrading of the rooms and with more staff making sure the guests behave themselves!
First, the facilities: definitely not up to a 4 star standard. The rooms and furnishings are a bit tired looking. The rooms are too small for 2 people. The double bed fits in the room and that's about it. Not really that bad, but at for the price I expect something nicer. The maintenance in the bathroom was poor; there was rust and there were bugs living in the spaces behind the tile that should have been filled in with caulk. The rumbling noise from the overpass nearby was a bit of an annoyance. Not the hotel's fault, but bring your earplugs.
The staff are friendly and pleasant. In fact, you can tell that they have been trained to say hello to all the hotel guests. But having someone say hello in the hallway isn't what I'm paying for. What matters to me is that the staff ensuring the facilities are kept clean and that the guests behave. To be fair, the area near the bath was kept clean, but that was about it. We found blood in the shower in the sauna but there was no one to clean it. The receptionist at the bath was too busy and there was no one else around.
My biggest complaint is that the guests are "allowed" to disturb other guests. I've been at a few spas around the world and have never encountered anything like I did at Bad Nieuweschans. The reason to go to a spa resort is to relax and to enjoy peace and quiet, but the facilities were anything but. In the rooms that were supposed to be "silent", people were talking loudly, rattling plastic bags around, and eating and drinking. It wouldn't have bothered me if it was an isolated incident or two, but it seemed that the majority of guests just couldn't deal with being quiet. My question is: where is the staff to monitor these rooms? I paid a lot of money to relax just to have it ruined by people who had no respect for other people. I blame primarily the guests, but the staff should be proactive in making sure people don't ruin other people's experience. If the staff say something to people when they enter the facilities about respecting other people, it might have helped. I'd also suggest having large signs to remind people to be quiet and staff checking in the facilities from time to time. We saw some small signs which were easily missed, but no staff at all in the quiet rooms to help keep things under control.
All in all, I probably won't go back. It's a shame because except for the guests, I'd be going back in spite of the rooms. The food was quite good and the sauna bar and the tea/coffee area with the fireplace very warm and inviting, but there are other spas with better-behaved guests.
