“cheap, food really poor, ok for young backpacker types used to roughing it”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2010

wish we had stayed elsewhere. first room was so filthy i couldn't bring myself to use bathroom.second room better, but holes in nylon type sheets. food dire, left overs at each meal for up to 4 days, breakfast finished at 0900, supper at 2100. staff ranged from helpful to surly, some clearly resent westerners especially women.
my second visit to sousse, a great area to explore but stay in a decent hotel, not this one

“Dont bother........stay at home”

We travelled for a late break and as my other half fancied somewhere that was a short flight away. Should not have listened to him!

I read the reports AFTER booking so was expecting things to be very bad. However, I dont think the place is as bad as some have stated considering it cost so little to stay there for the week half board. Well, that is a joke as we ate breakfast twice and only ate the evening meal, once.

Yes the place is very run down and the pool is a disgrace and no-one attempted to get in it when we were there, except to dangle their feet in to cool down.

The towels were changed every day, but the sheets were not changed at all.

The local men all use the bars as their locals and we felt uncomfortable going in there and ended up taking drinks up to our room and sitting out on the balcony. Ok if you had a pool view like we did. Dont know what it would be like if you faced the busy main road.

We used the local yellow cabs to get about. Make sure you settle a price before you get in other wise they will try to push it. we paid between 3-5 dinar to get into Sousse medina and then about 6-7 coming back as they charge more for the evening. The one time they used the meter, it came to over 10 Dinar!!!!!! dodgy clockk or what!

Every where you go you get people trying to get you to give them money, sometimes for nothing. I felt very uncomfortable. We went off the beaten track a few times to see how the locals live and it certainly makes you appreciate what we have back in the good old UK.

Saving grace... local supermarket outside on the right. Sold everything to keep you alive for the week.

Take a bottle of whatever you like to drink as they only sell wine or local stuff and that is not what we want at times.

We found the bed very comfy, but some might find them hard.

No one to help book any trips etc.

Port el Kantoui (not the right spelling) worth a visit as it is very relaxing. NO character though as purpose built in the 70's.

There are some lovely 4-5* hotels nearby in Sousse which may make for a more enjoyable stay.

All in all, I wish I had spent the money on a few days in the UK. Has TOTALLY out me off of visiting the country again.

“so enjoyable I am returning for a month end of feb”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2010

I paid £69 for half board for 1 week so I think I got excellent value.I found the food good and the chambermaid looked after me a treat cos I always tip on the first day and leave something in my room everyother day.I loved its position and 2 doors away from a cheap but big supermarket for those little treats.I bought a small saucepan for £1.25 and made cups of tea whenever I wanted. But if you ask reception for any kitchen utensils you want they will provide them at once.I think us brits have it too easy and forget that other cultures dont have are advantages .Loved the beach and catching the public bus for pennies or the little train that travels along the road and drops you at your hotel or travel by horse and cart (beautiful) or dolmus.I liked the fact the restarant and bars were inside rather than completely alfresco. My room was large and looked over were the Tunisian people lived which I liked. The weather was so good I couldnt do the sightseeing I wanted to so I look forward to going back end of Feb.As for prostitutes in the bar well I didnt see any and so what it adds to the flavour I,m just so glad I dont have to do it to earn a living.

“Worst holiday ever”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2010

Just returned from a week at the Sindbab Hotel, and have never been so happy to be home, this hotel is disgusting rooms ate dirty and dated no pans to even boil water for tea or coffee, maid just walk into your room at anytime, bathroom walls and toilet were dirty and disgusting, We arrived at 8.30pm and we were hungry as hadn't ate for a while we were told the dinning room was still open so we went to get some food, it was all dried up and you couldn't even tell what it was you were eating, wasn't any better for rest of the week, on our first night we got talking to some women in the bar some had been there a week and told us how bad it was, and another 2 had just arrived that day, they were moving to another hotel next day. The pool was dirty and water green, no entertainment at all when we were there, just the same cds played day and night, bar was mostly for the local men as not many guests went in apart from the women that were looking for a Tunisian man. went down to see the beach, walked through a building site to get there, it was dirty as well, rubbish and rubble everywhere, but most of Tunisia was like this, would not go back here ever.

“Basic but good value”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 October 2010

We have just come back from Tunisia and stayed at the Sindbad Hotel in Hammam Sousse. We had a lovely time. The hotel is quite quirky but nice, and clean. The food was basic but the cost of the holiday was low and so this is to be expected. There are plenty of restaurants nearby and within a short taxi ride away (remember to set your fare before you get in). The people at the hotel are very friendly and helpful. The drinks are very reasonably priced, as are the massage and beauty treatments (the 70 dinar package includes a proper hammam, massage, face lift etc (which is under £35)). We recommend the camel ride with the rep that comes to the hotel - 25 dinar (about £11). The pool is nice and there is a beach within a short walk (though you will walk past some building works (which cannot be heard from the hotel at all)). Do not accept "presents" from the people who come up to you on the beach trying to sell things.
Ask for a map of the Sousse area from behind the hotel desk. Port El Kantaoui is a short taxi ride away as is the medina and train station at Sousse. We also caught the train to Tunis from Sousse (about £9 open return in first class), and caught the metro/TGM from there to Sidi Bou Said - well worth a visit. All in all we had a fab time, met some lovely people and would like to go back to Tunisia again. You do get hassled in the souks in Tunis and Sousse but haggle, haggle, haggle and stand your ground. Most people speak some English, and are fluent in French. Have a nice time.
