“Need a major refurbishment in this hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 April 2011

Positive:
Great location, friendly staff with great service attitude, good buffet selection(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner), love the pool area and the surroundings, walking distance to the beach.
Negative:
Badly maintained hotel, furniture is OLD, look and feel of the hotel is OLD, Beds are hard with musty smell in the room. It is obvious the hotel hasn't been maintained since the opening. Don't get mislead by high occupancy levels, Owners/management company need to spend some money to improve the product to bring it in-line with other competitive hotels nearby. This is the only thing you need to do and your staff will look after rest!

“Friendly Staff, You get your privacy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 April 2011

This is the 4th time i'v visited Riverina with my family. Needless to say it has always met or exceed our expectations. The food in the hotel is always excellent. The rooms, pool and grounds are spotless. The staff are very well mannered, have a good level of English and always smiling. You really cant compare the Indian 4starts to this. You will definetly enjoy your stay out here.

“LOUSIEST HOTEL ON EARTH!!!! NEVER EVER STEP FOOT HERE.. ITS SUCKS”

It all seems to start well with a welcome drink and ends justs about there!! We were 3 women travelling from India and we were ushered to the dining hall as it was a proud "Indian Buffet menu".. if it wasn't for my long trip I would not have eaten there at all!! Sadly we did and this is what we had to eat: Spoilt Sambol, rancid chutneys, smelly and sour dosas, sticky uncooked paranthas and so on.. there was Veg Pulav but not served with raitha!! when i asked the waiter he says that the raitha was a part of the menu for the noon lunch and its not to be "repeated" for dinner!! I asked for the chef.. but he had "left". the next in line guy had also left and there were only "staff members" who had no authority or responsibility. I asked for Yogurt.. the waiter comes back and says "there is no yogurt in the kitchen"!! The only good part of dinner was ice cream-for obvious reasons that they did not make it (Thankfully). The lousy dinner was a whooping 2500 SLR!! The duty manager claimed he "understood" my problem and gave us 2 500ml bottles of water - complementary - for which we later were charged 300 SriLankan Rupees!! We skipped breakfast the next day as we did not want to risk it.. We were asked if we were "on a fast" when told that we clearly did not want to eat the HORRID FOOD that the hotel cooks!!! The service was Pathetic and below par. The beds were squeaky with bed bugs. Rooms had mosquitoes and ants were on our walls!! The floor was dam and room was smelly as hell!! The shower did not work and it took us only 7 calls to housekeeping and 45 minutes of wait to get the same rectified. overall the experience SUCKED!!!!!! This hotel does not deserve to be even called a 4 star hotel.. they must be stripped off their star status and the chef must be sacked along with the reckless staff!!! I've travelled a lot but this is my worst experience EVER! I wrote a 2 page complaint and gave it to the Duty Manager and yet to hear from anyone from the hotels so called management... SUGGEST THIS HOTEL TO THE WORST OF YOUR ENEMIES!!

“for rest and relaxation with your family”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 March 2011

This was the only hotel available when we decided to go on a group tour with my extended Family as all the prominent hotels in Sri Lanka was fully booked for the busy tourist season . I must admit the staff in the hotel were friendly and courteous except for a few rotten Apples who gave incorrect information. We had booked approximately 6 to 7 rooms which were close to each other . However we observed in the last moment that one of our rooms which was earmarked for my uncle and aunt had been given to an Arab Couple without our knowledge and my aunt and uncle were moved to a different location away from the group. This annoyed us a great deal and we made our intentions quite clear to the Management who later moved our uncle and aunt close to us . Other than this fiasco food was great and we had many varieties of Dishes on the buffet cart. I must admit the authentic Beruwala Biriyani served on Sunday was a treat worth the time and money spent. I heard that the hotel will be going through some major renovation after April and we might see a state of the art hotel looming in the next tourist season

“Our Wedding & Honeymoon at the Riverina”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 March 2011

Just before we flew to Sri Lanka I saw the negative comments listed here and was really worried about what we were going to find on arrival. These comments are not justified!!!!

We went to Sri Lanka to get married and picked the Riverina due to the pics and good reviews. I can honestly say that my family and I had an absolutely fantastic time and have all said it has been our best holiday EVER.

The staff went above and beyond to make our honeymoon special and our wedding ceremony was fantastic. The wedding package we purchased was great value for money and exceeded our expectations. We could not have wished for more our wedding was perfect.

The food in the hotel was excellent (plenty of choice). The rooms, pool and grounds are spotless (people always cleaning). The staff are very well mannered, have a good level of English and always smiling. They really cant do enough for you.

As recommended by the other reviews we spoke to the boys on the beach about excursions and met a fantastic gentleman called Viraj. We did a 3 day tour with Viraj for an excellent price in an air conditioned minibus and it was fantastic. We crammed soooo much into those 3 days, such as, gem museum, turtle hatchery, Galle, glass bottom boat ride, Yala National Park, Tea plantations & factory, elephant orphanage, temple of the tooth, Botanical gardens, herbal gardens, river safari and many more, not to mention all of the photo opportunities along the way. Viraj also provided us with daily Tuk Tuk services and recommended some fantastic restaurants that were reasonably priced and catered for all. We found Viraj to be extremely helpful, reliable, honest and trustworthy.

For anyone planning to visit Sri Lanka and stay at the Riverina, we highly recommend it and don't forget to speak with Viraj :)
