This hotel is set in beautiful, mountainous countryside and looks very much as in the photos and hotel promotion. If you intend to hire a car, it is not for the faint-hearted but La Palma is a rugged, spectacular island called 'Isla Bonita' beautiful island and has to be explored. Santa Cruz is an enchanting capital city full of nooks and crannies. To the north, where Hotel Romantica is situated, can have changeable weather and sometimes it is cloudy and rains but the week we spent there in January the weather was very good. La Palma is not known for it's beaches but it has some interesting natural swimming pools which can be fun to swim in, one of them is quite closeby to the hotel (10 minutes by car) and called Las Fajanas (hope that is correct spelling). Believe the hotel runs a mini bus to them but we went by car.
Accommodation - we had a v ery spacious room with a side sea view balcony. The rooms have flat screen TV's now and also new mattresses I believe in most, if not all rooms. The room was very comfortable and extremely spacious, although as said by other tripadvisors, perhaps in need of some renovation which I believe the new owner is in the process of doing. This is meant to be a rustic type of hotel, full of its own personality, not a breeze block monstrousity.
When we arrived, we were greeted by the receptionist, Alberto, who took us to our room which was, as requested, close to the dining room and hotel facilities as my partner can't walk too far. We particularly liked the hotel gardens, with lots of flowers and plants and a small pond. The bar area is very welcoming and in winter evenings, there is a fire.
The swimming pools, especially the indoor pool (did not use outdoor one while there) was very pleasant with murals of local scenes and usually I was the only one using the pool so very pleasant. The jacuzzi is lovely too.
Restaurant - we chose half board as there is not too much choice closeb y. Most nights we didn't have any problems getting seated, and only had a short wait on a public holiday when more people eat out. The system for half board was that the set menu was
displayed and you chose your selected choices and wrote down your room No. by 2 pm on day. The choice for the evening menu was usually for starters, soup or salad, and the soups were usually very good. The main course was usually meat or fish. The quantities weren't enormous but more than sufficient. The beef stroganoff was good, as was the tuna steak and salmon and most dishes. Only one night there was a choice of fried squid or fish and my companion didn't really like either but it was substituted for chicken curry. Most of the desserts were excellent, the only criticism would be that perhaps the fruit selection was a little limited but I think you could request other fruit as some days it just said 'grapes' The wine selection was good, with lots of wines from La Palma too. The restaurant and bar staff were very friendly and a special thanks to all of them. The breakfast - plenty of choice although an English breakfast should not be expected. Perhaps it needed to be laid out in a more organised way as the fruit juices, hot water for teas etc and cereals and toaster were quite close together.
A comment regarding the coffee, as previous tripadvisor comment said coffee wasn't very good. We found the coffee very good! Also the croissants and bread were excellent. Choice of cereals, juice, cold meats, jams etc. and fruit. Yoghurts etc. Also a hot dish of boiled, scrambled or fried eggs each day. Overall food good but don't expect
'haute cuisine'. There is also a charming Bodega which was open one night and on one evening a keyboard player. The entertainment is fairly discreet but you can always talk to people in the bar or play cards/board games.. This is not the run of the mill type place but I would recommend it for someone who wants to do some walking or exploring as it's a beautiful part of La Palma and wants to stay in a quiet, intimate hotel with friendly staff and owners.
