“Enjoyable stay in breathtaking surroundings”

The hotel was a gorgeous well run family business, really friendly staff, so knowledgable of the area. They're happy to share advice on the best places to visit. My favourite was the natural swimming pools at La Fajana. Stock up well on the ample buffet breakfast as you'll be out all day driving, hiking, sight seeing, there's so much to see, the island is incredible, with acres of pine forrests, jungle, plantations, fruit trees and bushes everywhere, caves, observatories right at the top, the most most stunning views from up there. We only had a short break, and with so much to see and do, we'll be going back. Would definately re-book in at La Romantica, the hotel we thought was spot on, our room was beautiful with balconies looking down over the village of Barlovento and out accross the forrests, amazing fragrant pine roof, you have robes in your room so you're well equipped to use the spa. Evening meal in the hotel was excellent, all fresh local produce. All in all, really enjoyable stay, wish we could have stayed a bit longer.

“Lovely and romantic, a perfect retreat!”

We had our honeymoon at La Palma Romantica and quickly realized we were in a remote paradise. La Romantica is thoughtfully laid out in beautiful surroundings. We were lucky to discover La Romantica and we cannot wait to return!

Douglas and his staff were friendly and professional. They got to know us by name. The food was delicious and varied. Breakfast was served until late in the morning and suited our needs well. Dinner was a wonderful treat for us each night. The restaurant is simple and elegant. We have fond memories of the wait staff who served us every night at our table. The service is far superior to any buffet, and always presented with a touch of class. If you go, definitely pay for half board. And ask about the bananas flambé!

La Palma Romantica is hard to reach without a car. You can take a bus to some of the towns and cities but it is time consuming and you will be limited in destination. We hired a car through the front desk at La Romantica for half our stay and we explored the island as much as possible. Next time we plan to get a car at the airport and keep it for all our time on La Palma.

Do not go to La Palma Romantica for a beach holiday. It is not close to the beach, and it is not intended for that kind of holiday. Go for the clean air and beautiful views of the sea. Go for the splendorous night sky. Go for serenity. Go for a very special experience.

And don't forget the bananas flambé!

“Relaxing, welcoming & comfortable”

We stayed a this hotel at the start of the 2010 season and had a fab time. We arrived late and had a warm welcome and speedy check in. The rooms are spacious and have lovely views with small balconies to enjoy a lazy afternoon. The hotel is in a peaceful location and in ideal base for sightseeing. The owners were very helpful with places to see and local events to attend and was always on hand. The jacuzzi was a real treat, the outdoor pool was too cold to use in May but the indoor was available, if a bit cooler than i would like. The food was excellent, the menu was so tempting we ate at the hotel instead of finding cheaper alternatives. I can recommend this hotel for a romantic week away, a sightseeing tour of la palma, a base for hiking, or just to see the clouds below the hotel in the morning.

“The Hidden Gem tucked away in beautiful countryside”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2010

This hotel is set in beautiful, mountainous countryside and looks very much as in the photos and hotel promotion. If you intend to hire a car, it is not for the faint-hearted but La Palma is a rugged, spectacular island called 'Isla Bonita' beautiful island and has to be explored. Santa Cruz is an enchanting capital city full of nooks and crannies. To the north, where Hotel Romantica is situated, can have changeable weather and sometimes it is cloudy and rains but the week we spent there in January the weather was very good. La Palma is not known for it's beaches but it has some interesting natural swimming pools which can be fun to swim in, one of them is quite closeby to the hotel (10 minutes by car) and called Las Fajanas (hope that is correct spelling). Believe the hotel runs a mini bus to them but we went by car.
Accommodation - we had a v ery spacious room with a side sea view balcony. The rooms have flat screen TV's now and also new mattresses I believe in most, if not all rooms. The room was very comfortable and extremely spacious, although as said by other tripadvisors, perhaps in need of some renovation which I believe the new owner is in the process of doing. This is meant to be a rustic type of hotel, full of its own personality, not a breeze block monstrousity.
When we arrived, we were greeted by the receptionist, Alberto, who took us to our room which was, as requested, close to the dining room and hotel facilities as my partner can't walk too far. We particularly liked the hotel gardens, with lots of flowers and plants and a small pond. The bar area is very welcoming and in winter evenings, there is a fire.
The swimming pools, especially the indoor pool (did not use outdoor one while there) was very pleasant with murals of local scenes and usually I was the only one using the pool so very pleasant. The jacuzzi is lovely too.
Restaurant - we chose half board as there is not too much choice closeb y. Most nights we didn't have any problems getting seated, and only had a short wait on a public holiday when more people eat out. The system for half board was that the set menu was
displayed and you chose your selected choices and wrote down your room No. by 2 pm on day. The choice for the evening menu was usually for starters, soup or salad, and the soups were usually very good. The main course was usually meat or fish. The quantities weren't enormous but more than sufficient. The beef stroganoff was good, as was the tuna steak and salmon and most dishes. Only one night there was a choice of fried squid or fish and my companion didn't really like either but it was substituted for chicken curry. Most of the desserts were excellent, the only criticism would be that perhaps the fruit selection was a little limited but I think you could request other fruit as some days it just said 'grapes' The wine selection was good, with lots of wines from La Palma too. The restaurant and bar staff were very friendly and a special thanks to all of them. The breakfast - plenty of choice although an English breakfast should not be expected. Perhaps it needed to be laid out in a more organised way as the fruit juices, hot water for teas etc and cereals and toaster were quite close together.
A comment regarding the coffee, as previous tripadvisor comment said coffee wasn't very good. We found the coffee very good! Also the croissants and bread were excellent. Choice of cereals, juice, cold meats, jams etc. and fruit. Yoghurts etc. Also a hot dish of boiled, scrambled or fried eggs each day. Overall food good but don't expect
'haute cuisine'. There is also a charming Bodega which was open one night and on one evening a keyboard player. The entertainment is fairly discreet but you can always talk to people in the bar or play cards/board games.. This is not the run of the mill type place but I would recommend it for someone who wants to do some walking or exploring as it's a beautiful part of La Palma and wants to stay in a quiet, intimate hotel with friendly staff and owners.

“Short break in La Palma”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 July 2009

We had a short break at the Hotel in July 09 the new owner and his family and staff were welcoming, very polite and friendly. Rooms were spacious well appointed all with sea views. Our room was on the top floor with a lovely sloping wooden ceiling.
Breakfast was self service with a wide selection of choices. Evening meal was waiter service and again was very good and if there was a specific dietary request they were more than happy to please you. You could choose to have any of your meals in the Dining room or the Conservatory.
The spa was elegant with hand painted murals and had a tranquil atmosphere.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here.
