OVERALL:
The hotel is nice but overpriced for what they are offering and closer to a three-star property than a four-star one. The overall feeling of the decoration, service and food is like being in a Greek hotel in the 1980s. It is quiet with excellent landscaping (large lawn and many trees to relax under) and a very clean pebble beach, but it could be greatly improved in many areas with very little effort and cost, to make it worth the money. It has obviously seen better days and the fact that it was busy with foreign tour groups and families may be a recent development -- it felt that the hotel is geared to undemanding older (Greek) travellers who knew this part of Greece well when it was popular 20 or so years ago. This hotel is a clear example of a property that is adequate, but completely out of touch with the present and unaware that the Greek tourism industry is suffering.
GOOD:
1. The landscaping. The outside areas are beautifully maintained, with large areas of green lawn and large trees which give plenty of shade during the day when it's hot. The swimming pool is large but a separate childrens' pool would help when it gets busy.
2. The beach. Golf-ball sized pebbles on the beach make for crystal clear water and a bit further in there is a large strip of sand with schools of small fish everywhere. The beach is almost always empty and quite long (shared with a campsite further down the coast).
BAD:
1. Renovations. The hotel is clean but all the furniture and decor and overall style is quite dated. There is none of the bright, "fresh" feeling you get in other similarly-priced Greek hotels and this is a bit disappointing. For the category and price of the hotel, the lack of any style, decent furniture and attention to detail is inexcusable.
2. Food & Hygiene. We were on a half-board basis: breakfast and dinner) and the food felt home-made and was varied enough but a lot was missing, especially for a hotel of this size and price -- the hot dishes were not covered (fortunately there weren't many flies around), there was NO variety of fruit, only watermelon and occasionally melon, and some items (like ice cream) were rotated so every day you had 2 different flavours to choose from, but not the entire selection. It was obvious that corners were cut to save costs, but this is inexcusable as we chose this hotel for the convenience of not having to eat anywhere else.
3. Entertainment. This hotel was popular with families, most of whom had small children. Yet for one week, we saw almost no evening or daytime entertainment to keep them busy. One "Greek Night" of dancing seemed to attract the most people, and there was another "Disco Night" and there were daily showings of films in a small outdoor theatre, but much more could have been done with a little bit imagination.
4. Sports. Similar to the entertainment, the large beach did not offer any kayaks, windsurfs or other watersports for the more active types, or their children. Again this ties into the feeling that having families and children in this hotel might be a recent change that they haven't quite prepared for.
5. Food. It was clean, and mostly tasty, but became monotonous after one week (which is inexcusable since most people stay on average one week). So much could be done to improve it -- better hygiene, fresher products (less variety would be just fine if what was offered was fresh) and especially the hot breakfast options -- having the same poor quality croissants and the same omelette, boiled eggs and bacon every day, can get very tiring.
6. The Rooms. These were large and clean, but very dated -- it's unusual to see non-flat screen TVs these days, or such flimsy wooden furniture, or the old radio-built-into-the-nightstand-which-never-works-anyway. Linen and towels were clean and changed often by very helpful staff, but for the money they charge, most other hotels will give you complimentary toiletries and extras in the room, it's pretty much assumed these days. Note to our European/British friends: a kettle or some kind of tea/coffee making corner in the room does not exist. However, most rooms have an impressive view of the sea and the pool.
7. Functions. We saw one wedding and a christening within one week, and it shows how popular the garden is, but in one instance there was no warning/notice given to the guests, and the loud music continued until 12.45am. It was obviously a special occasion, which is perfectly understandable, but the hotel guests should be made aware of it in advance. I can only imagine how many children were keeping their parents awake that night!
8. Internet. A disappointing lack of it, considering the size of this hotel. There was one PC available in the lobby (and wi-fi which covered only the lobby area) for free, but often there were several people sitting there with laptops and phones connected at the same time, which meant the connection speed was so slow that it was not usable. bviously the hotel management has no idea of what sort of service should be provided and it would have been better if they had no internet at all and told us that it would be installed in the future. This is a minimal expense and inexcusable for a hotel of this size and star rating.
