My wife Chris and I took our youngest daughter and her friend to Markella during August. We had booked car hire from the Airport and drove ourselves there, which was easy and quick being only about 15 km (9 miles). My wife doesn’t like being driven abroad (or by me for that matter) and wasn’t looking forward to that, but the island is only around 25 miles long so you can drive round it in a few hours. Also the highest speed limit is 50 kph so I don’t think we managed to exceed 37 mph the whole week. By the end Chris was pleased that we did have the car, as it allowed you to see so much more. If you didn’t want a car for your whole stay there are two rental firms a matter of yards away from the studios.
The apartments were great. We had rented a standard apartment for the girls and a garden apartment for us. The standard one is a bit basic but our one was very nice with two balconies (one off the sitting room, the other off our bedroom) and as everyone has commented nice and clean. We had gone for two apartments as the site we booked on stated that the foldaway beds in the lounge of ours was only suitable up to 12 years old. This we found out was wrong so we could have just had the one. But the girls are 17 so it was good for them to have their own space.
We paid the extra for the Aircon which we did use a fair bit. Although it was a balance at night between the heat and the noise of the unit, which wasn’t excessive but would disturb some. We had booked the breakfast, which was cereal, toast, eggs, yoghurt, and local cakes. It may be that you could better elsewhere but it was convenient and sufficient for us. You could also have light lunches there, such as toasted sandwiches, omelettes and similar.
The pool was nice and clean and there were enough loungers, but we have to agree with other comments in saying that we think they should provide cushions for them, as being plastic they became quite uncomfortable after a while.
We cannot relate to some of the comments made, such as the bar being noisy, that just wasn’t the case and it did close at Midnight in any case. Towels were changed during our week’s stay even though some did not need it and if there was a problem, you have ask why they didn’t speak to Debbie or Dimitri, as they could not have been more helpful. Resolving a few small issues we had immediately. Parking the car outside on the road wasn’t an issue either as effectively there was a narrow lay-by they had created.
Dimitri really helped with his knowledge of the island and the price of excursions etc. Which allowed us to have some great day’s out, going to all the best places and saved us money for instance in getting the best deal on the “Blue Caves” boat trip.
The local beach is O.K. but I’m not keen on stony beaches so at our hosts’ suggestion we tried those on the Eastern Peninsula near Vasilikos, where there are sandy beaches like Dafni, which was very nice. This is a conservation area as the Turtles lay their eggs along that coast; and other guests were there on the beach when some actually hatched.
There are numerous restaurants at Keri Beach and closeby. We tried a number, including one on the cliff at the far end of the beach with great views across the bay. The tavern closest to the studios was good but our favourite was the Keri Tavern which was on the right at the end of the road when you get to the beach, which served great food and accommodated requests if you wanted something not covered by the extensive menu (not a lot).
Overall we really liked Zante, with the exception of Laganas which is the 18-30 type resort on the island, where I had to take the girls to meet some of their friends who were also holidaying there. But that’s probably just my age! We had a very enjoyable, relaxing break, much of the credit for which must go to Debbie and Dimitri and would thoroughly recommend their studios. We would have liked to stay longer.
