Evia was the best of both worlds very peaceful and quite handy to visit bustling Athens, which we would recommend. As it takes about 2 hr to get to Athens by bus and there is so much to see there I would recommend catching an early morning bus. We were told journey time can be reduced by catching a ferry over to mainland then catching a bus from there,although we never tried it.
Not much to Amarynthos village but people very nice. A short bus ride on regular service takes you to Eretria where there is more to see & do.
Ertria was mentioned in Homers Iliad. Great place to eat across the road from Ferry port to main land, food reasonably priced and staff very nice

Our hotel was very dated, dirty and in need of a major upgrade. We were told by a local that the hotel was built for weekenders escaping Athens for a few days and was never intended for tourists and that was why it was in its present condition.
We never once seen anyone tending cleanliness of the pool, the same debris that was in the pool on our arrival was still ther the day we left. When on our balcony we were often treated to the stench of sewage. We found our sheets & towels grey and very worn

During our stay only 1 bar & resturant was open. While I realise that the like/dislike of food is subjective we found the menu disappointing to say the least, that aside the microwave was well used by most of the guests as everything was served tepid and the room was heaving was flies. During our stay we never had a starter or dessert because of the flies crawling on everthing. We resorted to bringing our own juice and bread to toast for breakfast rather than share with the flies.
I have had many holidays abroad and have never experienced a resturant or flies like it.
If you want a beach hotel this is not the place for you as the beach here is no more that a strip of builders agrigate barely wide enough for a sun lounger in places. We never seen the beach bar open during our stay
While we may return to Evia we will never return to Hotel Stefania.
