“Good food, shame about the service”

This review refers only to the restaurant Da Felicin, where we ate in October 2010. While we liked the food, the service almost ruined the evening. It began with them being unable to "find" our reservation, despite the fact that we had even left our phone number. After a bit of discussion we were finally moved a table in the entrance hall to the main dining hall. As soon as we were seated, the waitress poured us each a glass of white wine we had not ordered. Needless to say, we later found this on our bill at 6 Euros per glass. Other little details that didn't seem quite right: leaving the "reserved" sign on our table after we were seated, leaving the menu after we had ordered (but later plucking it off our table to hand it to another guest), almost pulling the empty (or not empty) plates out of our hands, literally throwing the cutlery onto the table instead of placing it neatly, not giving us a chance to order out desert. The highlight was the sommelier, who was very friendly and competent and recommended excellent wines. The food was good, though nothing really pops out (yes - the hazelnut cake with moscato sabaione). It seems to me they rely too much on their reputation and on the guests staying at the hotel.

“A landmark restaurant with world-class wine cellar and cuisine”

As a professional wine and food writer and professional Italophile, I wholeheartedly recommend Felicin to anyone looking for a world-class, authentic wine and food experience in Piedmont. I've now dined there twice (the first time was in April 2008, most recently in March 2010, on both occasions in the company of wine and food professionals). During both seatings, the owner created menus especially for that evening, including traditional Piedmontese dishes and his family's own unique recipes, drawing from classic Piedmontese ingredients. The food was wonderfully fresh and superbly prepared and the service, especially the wine service, was literally impeccable. The wine cellar, while not inexpensive, is widely considered one of the best in Italy and on both occasions, the sommelier chose bottlings that truly thrilled me. A "must" experience for lovers of Piedmont, its wines and its culinary tradition.

“Sublime food and wine!”

My husband and I do a gourmet trip in the Piedmont region of Italy every year, a long way from Australia, but worth it. Our first experience was a fabulous Sunday lunch in 2008. On our return this year we made a point of staying in this delightful albergo for four nights. Our room, traditional italian style, was a very convenient walk upstairs from the elegant restaurant. Our stay was made very special by the wonderful host/chef Nino. Every night in the restaurant was a delight, with Nino surprising us with a variety of new tastes and dishes that could only be described as inspired. A perfect compliment to the food were the excellent recommendations made by the wonderful sommelier from the well stocked wine cellar, which is definately worth a visit if you are lucky! A family run restaurant with over three generations of experience in hospitality. Under the care of Georgio for breakfast (his home made jams are wonderful, some even made it home to Australia) to dinner with Nino as chef and food guide, an all round winner that we would highly recommend to any one keen on food and wine. Monforte d'Alba is a very quiet town, but well positioned to explore the area.

“Gourmet food and perfect location.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2009

I write a wine blog and was touring the Piemonte region of Italy. One of my California friends recommended this place. The location is absolutely perfect for driving through the entire wine area, although the main building is a bit hard to find using a GPS. The small street is just off the main square but not well marked. If they would add a note on their website directions that "we are just behind the town church" that would help.

On arrival I was greeted by Nino's father...the place has been in the family for over 80 years (I think) and Nino and his wife Silvia now run the place. All the people there were delightful and helpful. And Nino is the creative "chef" in charge of the menu. And creative he is! Some of the best food I've had anywhere, and I typically stay at 4-5 star places in France. His 3-hour menu is awesome and priced very well for the quality and the style of the restaurant. Some of the best sauces I've tasted both in-and-out of France. I cannot say enough positive about the cuisine.

Some other reviewers commented on the apartmenst they have available. If you can walk up a small steep brick street at night get one of these! The views are great, the facilities newly renovated, and the size is awesome. I had a nice bedroom area, a kitchen, a nook area, and a very large bathroom with a big shower. And the price was reasonable.

Nino is very helpful setting up local winery tours and knows everyone! Although he is always busy running things, he is a great source of information. Some of the other staff people (Andrea I think) are also great and helpful.

Since I travel to Italy a lot, I would never miss the chance to stay and eat here.

“nice place but be aware!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 May 2009

very charming and nice place with good food. But be aware of typical italian tricks to make you pay more than necessary while eating in the restaurant. They are `fully booked` if you didn´t make a reservation, but then they can arrange something for you! Next they say it´s too busy to order à la carte, so you have to take the menu. They don´t ask you which menu you would like to eat, but simply start to serve you the most expensive one and charge you that price even if you don´t take all the courses.
