“A true DELUXE property”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

We have just returned from a week at Carlisle Bay and enjoyed every minute. It is the optime of a deluxe property. We never left the property (we're ashamed to say) and enjoyed every minute while there. The ocean-facing suites are perfectly situated - 20 yards from the sandy, clean and private beach. The service in the rooms, restaurants and beach reflects the grade level of the property. The staff are knowledgable, helpful and friendly without being "in your face" or sullen. The assistance is genuine and continuous, continuously enquiring if we were satisfied with the service we received. The rooms are large, well appointed and contemporarly decorated. The makeup of guests are from small family groups to couples. The family accommodations were in a separate part of the property but not too far apart.. Noise was never a problem - we loved the quiet on the beach. We never felt crowded or pressured into making reservations at the 2 restuarants far in advance to secure a table. The spa offers all treatments and we loved the hot-rock massage. Tennis courts are well kept and easy to secure. The gym is adequate and not crowded in the least.

An enormous plus was the free wifi everywhere on the property. It bothers me no end when hotels nickle and dime customers at expensive hotels for wifi. The Carlisle gets it!!

The water sports are perfect - kyaking, sailing, scuba etc. but the sound of engines and boats didn't interrupt the peace on the beach.

If you're looking for a deluxe, contemporary hotel that offers consistant top service - this is it.

“Carlisle Bay...fantastic in SO many ways but not without its flaws”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

Just back from 7 days in Carlisle Bay (1/28-2/4), the first family holiday with the husband, our 22 month old son and 5 month old daughter.

Best points
-the beach! it's a stunning bay with clear water and soft sand, and the water is shallow and calm (perfect for young kids). at one end of the beach, there's a mangrove area which is a great spot for finding pretty shells
-SUPER kid friendly but doesn't feel like a family resort. there were lots of couples and older guests there too but they seemed to be at the other end of the beach (maybe a deliberate move by management?). they provide lots of amenities for the kids - from robes, bottle sanitizers and cribs in the room to plenty of high chairs in the restaurants and beach toys by the water
-breakfast - included in our rate (i think it may be for all rates), there's a nice buffet spread of fresh fruit, cereals and homebaked pastries and then a large selection of cooked western and caribbean entrees. best part is, we would eat at 730/8 with the kids, but then get late morning lattes or cappuccinos at the beach (free before 11am)
-complimentary afternoon tea from 330-5 and then complimentary kids dinner from 530-7
-the service - all excellent, especially the ones in room service. we also had a problem with our AC and they did everything they could do get it up and running ASAP - the manager on duty himself was even up and down the ladder to the roof to check on things and provided some compensation for our trouble
-the food - we had some friends who said it's predictable after a while, but we were perfectly happy with the choices for 5 out of our 7 nights there. The mixed Asian cuisine from the EAST restaurant was about as good as you'll find anywhere in the world (proper green curry, murgh makhani, miso seabass, tuna tataki)

Other notes:
-the best rooms to stay in are the beach balcony and terrace suites numbered from 1-40 (we stayed in beach balcony 2BR suite #24 and it was perfectly near everything: the pool, the breakfast area etc)
-don't miss the weekly BBQ
-bottled filtered drinking water is absolutely FREE; one of the reviews here quoted $8/bottle of water but that does not mean plain drinking water

The flaws:
-terrible wireless in the rooms - my husband spent much of the holiday in the bathroom with the computer perched on the toilet
-2BR suite layout and decor. the main bedroom/living room is nice and roomy, but the smaller bedroom/office is where everything is kept so if you're using it as a baby's room, you'll have to do a bit of planning so as not to wake the baby up when you need to get to the fridge, use the wireless (because that's where it works best), the kettle (unless you plug in the bathroom). also, while the decor is generally fresh and modern, the rooms feel like they are just "partly" refurbished - for $$$/night, there shouldn't be mismatched/damaged lampshades, random locked doors (don't know if they're utility closets or what) or ripped/damaged drapes
-faulty AC (which took nearly a day to fix and required us moving rooms mid-stay)
-serious sandflies - we were eaten alive, thankfully the kids weren't. the resort apparently sprays and "treats" the sand (whether that means just daily raking or some chemical, who knows)

We only ventured out twice during our week-long stay, but if you must, we'd recommend:
-Sunday reggae/calypso party at Shirley Heights. We took the kids - you'd have a lot more fun if you didn't. The steel drum band was awesome and you could tell the crowd was in for a big night
-dinner at Sheer Rocks. The chef used to be the head chef at Carlisle Bay so the food was quite good...but the atmosphere was really nice with intimate areas stacked on the cliffside overlooking the water. We were told that it's a great place for sunsets (there are some balinese style day beds there too) or for a boozy Sunday brunch.

Dear MHTK,

Thank you for posting your feedback on Trip Advisor. Whilst it was lovely to read that many aspects of your stay impressed, we were naturally very sorry that on this occasion you also experienced some frustrations.

I am so sorry that the poor signal strength in your suite was unable to be rectified at the time, which I know was most inconvenient. Needless to say the fault has since been addressed.

It was also very regrettable that items with in your suite were less than perfect. We run an on-going perfect room program at Carlisle Bay to ensure that soft furnishings, furniture and the décor as a whole, remain to standard. Again following your comments we prioritised updates for this suite. Regarding your observation about the second bedroom, we have recently completed two sample suites to allow us to trial a new lay out incorporating further storage, handmade beds, new drapes and upgraded lighting. This new design will be introduced throughout our Beach Suites.

I was concerned to read about your encounter with sand flies. We fog every other day just before sunset using a non toxic, environmentally friendly product, which is generally very effective. I was therefore sorry to read that you had been affected in this way.

Thank you again for providing such considered critique and should you wish to discuss further do let me know and I will be pleased to contact you directly.

Kind Regards,

Jonathan Reynolds

“Carlisle Bay – A Fabulous Family Find”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

I was always aware how Carlisle Bay was known to be a good property for families, however, having just experienced a 4 night stay at the property with my husband and 4 year old son, I can undoubtedly say the hotel couldn’t be any more PERFECT for families, especially those traveling with small children, and yes, infants. Carlisle Bay offers a casual easy- going elegance. From the mini Frette bathrobes for kids to the nightly complimentary kids buffet, the resort was a big hit for our recent family getaway. If you are a family looking for a new destination, read on, this review is all about FAMILY.

The hotel’s décor is a cross between South Beach and Asian flair. Overall, the property has a contemporary feel set in a lush tropical environment. The public areas are all open design with dark teak wood and oversized white slip covered sofas and chairs complemented with modern rattan furnishings.

Sleeping rooms are simple and bright. Contemporary, clean design with contrasting white bedding and sofas complemented with dark wood furnishings. All of the rooms at the resort have a large verandah or patio with a full sized teak day bed and dining table and chairs which is great for enjoying breakfast in your room or a late afternoon sunset cocktail. All of the rooms have a living area with a large white sofa, coffee table, oversized lounge chair and large plasma TV. The bathrooms are a good size with double sinks separate bathtub and shower stall and ample closet space. You will also find a well stocked minibar and espresso and cappuccino machine with complimentary coffee and milk.

There are basically two different room layouts within the property (except for the few large suites). There are “The Beach Suites” which are identical in layout and are either a lower unit (Terrace) or 2nd floor unit (Balcony) and the Garden and Ocean Suites which are also identical in layout except for the view. I did tour all of the rooms while at the hotel so if you have any questions, feel free to drop me a line.

I would have to consider The Beach Terrace & Balcony Suites probably one of the most logical hotel room layouts for families I have encountered. Kudos to the architects of Carlisle Bay for this simple, yet effective, design. The room is a long rectangle shape with large open sleeping and sitting area facing the water and a small separate “kids” bedroom with two twin beds toward the rear of the room, separated by the bathroom. The addition of this small separate sleeping area eliminates the need for having to obtain connecting rooms and gives mom and dad the privacy to enjoy evenings when the kids go to sleep! This hotel room is not much larger than many of the standard resort sized rooms, however, having the separate bedroom for kids, is a huge plus. All of these rooms are beachfront and I mean beachfront. Step off your patio and within 15 steps your toes are touching the sea. We were in a ground floor unit and traveling with our 4 year old this room allowed us to truly relax and enjoy every minute of our time at Carlisle Bay. We were able to wake up and take pleasure in a cappuccino on our patio while our 4 year old couldn’t wait to play in the sand and surf. Whether we were taking up a game of Scrabble on our patio or lounging in the sand we never had to be concerned with the calmest waves lapping the shoreline. Almost all of the families were located in this area of the resort, which is no coincidence, I later learned. Or next door neighbors were a new mom and dad enjoying their first trip with their 4 month old. Again, a perfect set up since baby spent most of the day sleeping in the room which was just steps away from mom and dad who were lounging on the beach.

The Beach and Garden Suites are loft like square shaped rooms with the bedroom area raised with a step up from the living/sitting area. The bathroom is located directly behind the bedroom. All of these rooms have a large patio or verandah. These rooms are perfect for couples and are located further down the beach from the above mentioned rooms.
These rooms are slightly more set back from the beach (compared to the above mentioned rooms) however, to be honest; instead of 15 steps from the water maybe you are 30 steps from the water! Most other hotels would consider these rooms beachfront!

The hotel is a small boutique property. We found it so simple to move between our room, the restaurants, the gym, the kids club, the pool, the water sports area. Everything was incredibly manageable and convenient and never more than a 2 minute walks to get anywhere. We found this a huge upside. If you had to run back to your room for any reason, it was so easy.

The hotel has a very nice complimentary kids club with planned activities daily. The Kids Club has a kiddie pool, jungle gym, bikes and trikes, indoor playarea, etc. One of our favorite kid amenities was the complimentary kid’s supper buffet served daily between 5:00pm and 6:30pm. This was an enjoyable time of the day when the kids and parents congregated in the restaurant near the pool. Kids would enjoy dinner with their new friends while parents sipped on a cocktail or beer and socialized. I thought it was a very nice added touch the hotel offers. I later learned from the hotel manager (when I was complimenting the hotel on this added perk) that offering the kids buffet helps to keep the restaurants “more adult like” in the evenings. What a great idea! And speaking of restaurants, the hotel has 3 separate restaurants. One being the main restaurant which is located directly on the beach and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. There is an Italian themed restaurant near the pool which has a pizza oven and serves salads, antipasti, pasta, etc. There is also a more formal dinner restaurant which is an Asian Indian theme. We did enjoy room service a couple of nights and thought the service, presentation and varieties of offerings were good. All in all, the food was very good, a solid offering. The quality and options were very satisfactory and of course, a kids menu was always offered (except in the formal dining restaurant).

The hotel has many beach toys available for use by the guests including , boogie boards, floating loungers, sand toys, kayaks, sail boats, ping pong tables, etc. There are tennis courts and a very well equipped gym. We never felt the need to venture outside of the property however I did notice that within just a few miles of the hotel is a rain forest zip line canopy tour. All in all, we would go back and i would definately recommend this hotel to friends and clients.

“A Damp Squib”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

people found this review helpful

After seeing photos of this hotel for years, and being lulled into believing it would be a very exotic place, I must confess my first impression was a bit of a damp squib - and it remained that way...

On the whole we found everything rather average, especially the common parts and the food. What does work well is that the swimming pool, on the whole, seems to remain the preserve of families, so you can avoid other people's children bellowing all day by escaping to the beach.

What does mark the hotel out above most others on Antigua is the bay. It's tranquil and perfect especially if you don't want to stray from the compound. Regards the location - hard to say if it's good or not. You're about 20 minutes from Falmouth and Nelson's Dockyard, but an hour from the airport and St John's. It really depends on what you want to do, or where you want to go.

But my lasting impression of this hotel will yet again be of women with surgically altered faces - public school educated Tristram's and Cheska's from Chelsea and Fulham - and vulgar rich families, one of which prompted the wonderful line I heard two local female staff utter one lunch time whilst cleaning up after one wasteful American family "stupid rich people with too much money wasting food"

.

Dear Serial_Traveller,

We were all very sorry to read that Carlisle Bay failed to meet your expectations.

Time away is extremely precious, therefore one would always wish it to be special.

One of the lovely aspects of Carlisle Bay is that it has always hosted an appealing mix of guests and individuals who generally travel extensively. Regardless, we deeply regret that you should have departed with a less than positive impression. Please do contact me directly in order that I may assist further.
