“Andrew Goddard top barman”

Stayed at Halcyan Palm sept 19 2004 for 2 weeks.Room is large but air con only in bedroom, kitchen/ dining room extremely hot at all times.Had a flooded bathroom due to an overflowing toilet which was sorted eventually.Poolside restaurant offered good value but had little other than burgers and chips, the bar which is nearby again was well priced but only came to life when Andrew was on duty.
Outside the complex bars and restaurants are nearby in Holetown, buses are available about a 5 minute walk away and are very frequent.
Would reccomend the helicopter tour of the island and the Atlantis submarine trip.
All in all a basic complex with plenty to do away from Sunset crest if you are happy to get buses or taxis.

“a residential resort”

We stayed at the Europa Aug 2004. Sunset Crest is a residential area with appartments and villas within it. Some apartments are very nice but the Europa apartments vary from basic (as described in Airtours brochure) to pretty awful. We had to be moved due to the state of the first one we were in. They are cleaned daily, but there are many problems with plumbing (limescale on taps which leaked, blocked loos, a burst pipe resulting in brown water to name a few) stained curtains and valances, and they only have air conditioning in the bedroom - token operated. The main living space is large but was like an oven and so cooking was virtually impossible and so was sleeping in this room.
The entertainment as advertised was one evening a week was really a small display (belly dancing and limbo), though the food was lovely. The poolside bar food was generally good and reasonable. The best thing about it was the bar stayed open till 11.
The bar shuts at 10 or before everynight apparently because of the residents around the complex. As there is nothing in the way of nightlife in Holetown, this was particularly disappointing.

The Baku beach club was like a building site round the pool and the disco had 10 people in it on both occassions members of our party tried it.

The male bartender at the Europa was wonderful and being on his own, coped admirably on the entertainment nights. The receptionists on the desk were also friendly polite and helpful.

The pool was cleaned but is very small and there are an adequate number of sunbeds. Iced water is provided for free from the bar.

I understand a much needed, complete overhall is being undertaken for these apartments - not before time.
I hope she doesn't mind, but I would also like to mention that our Airtours rep -Solange was wonderful.

“Beware outdated web sites/photos!”

My wife and I rented a one bedroom condominium in the Sunset Crest area near Holetown. We went in the first two weeks of the "off season" starting on April 16th, 2004. The beaches were wonderful as was the snorkelling and the locals friendly. This Island really does seem to offer a reasonable standard of living to it's population. We travelled extensively by bus which is cheap and efficient though at times a little scary. I mean the traffic, at no time did we feel threatened by the people even after dark and we walked everwhere in the evening around our neighbourhood. The reason I gave this review a low rating is that we had been expecting to make extensive use of the "Baku Beach Club" which looked excellent on the web. We found it very disappointing and did not use it after our first visit. We were told that the photos of it used in the web sites were taken a few years ago so take care not to believe all you see! I enjoyed myself overall but my wife did not. If we had it to do over again we would go a little earlier in the season and spend the extra to have a place right on the beach. Finally, don't forget to take a folding umbrella as rain showers are frequent but warm and of short duration. Our favourite spot was "Mullin's Bay" where one could get beach chairs, booze and food as well as excellent swimming and watersports.
