Just back from the GGBR. We enjoyed our stay in Grenada, and would recommend this hotel to couples, families, people on business and to friends. It is clean, comfortable and reasonably priced, especially considering its location. This is not a super elegant luxury hotel, but it is on a very beautiful beach and has fabulous pools with lush gardens.
People who worked at the hotel were pleasant but not always particularly helpful-- for instance they often seemed at a loss at times to direct us to snorkeling places. We had trouble finding tours we could go on at 1st, but finally had the Shadowfax catamaran lobster & champagne trip recommended to us. It was a wonderful day and we highly recommend it.
Housekeeping kept the room nice, but more than once took the used towels and would forget to replace them! The room had a coffee machine in it for no apparent reason, as only instant coffee was provided along with powdered creamer & an electric water heater. In fact finding real brewed coffee was a challenge throughout our stay in Grenada. But it is nice that the tap water is fine for drinking (which seemed to be true throughout Grenada).
The restauarant was fine for breakfast, but the service was a bit laid back & slow. Whenever we ate there though, we didn't need lunch that day!
Our room was on the 2nd floor and had a fabulous ocean view. If this is within the travel budget, get a waterfront room. We could hear the sea lapping the shores at night. The bed was comfortable, and I have a very bad back, so that really was a valued feature.
We had a mishap upon checking out-- some long distance calls showed up on our bill that we had not placed. These totalled about $35-40 US. Instead of assuming that we were telling the truth, we were told the problem would be investigated before the charges were dropped. I felt like we were under suspicion until the manager finally stepped in to remove the charges. We found out from him that the numbers were to a toll-free french line (so even if we had made them, they should have been free!), and we do not speak French well enough to even consider calling such a number. Before the manager stepped in, however, we we told that the electronic key to our door indicated we were in the room at the times of the calls and therefore that seemed enough to imply we had made the calls. It didn't seem to enter anyone's head that perhaps their phone system had a glitch.
In any case, the charges were dropped, but we were left to hang out around the hotel on our last afternoon in Grenada for about 1 1/2 hours while this 'case' was checked out. My advice: if this happens to you in any hotels that does not take your word upfront that you did not make calls, ask for the manager right away. It was quite unpleasant being looked at as though we were trying to get away with something. I would have rated the hotel a '5' had it not been for this very strange situation and the front desk staff's reaction to it.
But all in all, this is a good hotel for the money, and Grenada is a lovely, welcoming island. Be sure to get a driving tour of the island and to see the nutmeg processing areas, the Belmont Estate (chocolate!), a rum distillery, the rainforest & the waterfalls. A word of caution: don't run to rent a car without 1st seeing what you're getting into! The roads are narrow, built on hairpin turns, are steep and have built-in rain gutters that an unfamiliar driver could drive into and completely total a car.
