I endorse all the good reviews below. This is well managed with top levels of service and facilities all done very well indeed.
Our seaview villa was beautiful, with a lovely big bathroom/dressing room with sea view and a big marble bath. Different local fruits arrive daily with a handy booklet to tell you about them. Good powerful aircon keeps it deliciously cool. A daily sheet tells you about the various activites around the hotel. Twice daily refreshing of all the towels and toiletries, copious free water and milk for the fridge.
Our villa 129 was quite a long walk from anything, the far end of the row made it very private but you cant easily nip back to the room from the beach without an uphill walk and some steps. I'm sure you can request a nearer room if this matters more to you.
My only very minor gripe about the lovely room is that the tea/coffee facility, which I always greatly appreciate in hotels, here feels like an afterthought, cheaply done with a very basic kettle and mismatched teabags and nescafe sachets. It feels like a cheap 3 star and isnt up to the lovely standard of everything else. I suggest a rethink here would be wise. Otherwise it is pretty faultless all round.
The infinity pool is lovely and the beach area is well tended with highly attentive staff who rush to help with providing constant shade. Fruit or sorbet arrives at your lounger at 1 PM . A gentle breeze kept it cooler by the beach .
As others have noted, you dont get a huge expanse of white sandy beach for long strolls here. What you do get is a smallish but private well tended beach with lovely warm water for swimming, shallow until a fair way out, with easy snorkelling and equipment provided. Its really lovely and relaxing here.
Special credit to trainee manager Florian who makes a real effort to talk to guests. We gave him honest feedback about the restaurants and mentioned service had been a little bit slow one evening, not meant as a complaint at all. Next day we got champagne and a jar of chocolate macaroons in the room with an effusive letter of apology from the manager and an offer of a free dinner in any restuarant. we were very impressed they took the service levels so seriously and want to truly excel.
Our view of the 3 restaurants overall is that they need to better delineate the 3 . They have different but rather similar menus and a similar style and feel. They style the beachfront one as 'casual' but we thought it the best and most romantic setting and much preferred it to the Lan Thai which is in the breakfast room area and felt devoid of any atmosphere as it was so empty - would be better themed as the more modest and casual option we felt. The most 'posh' of the 3 with pricier french inspired food is too near the main pool to quite achieve the classy feel it wants. It needs a better separation from the pool bar area. Entertainment was a bit cheesy though the sax/flute player is very talented.
Food was pretty decent . I particulary liked the desserts and recommend the crispy feulletine, chocolate fondant and French apple tart. Mains were less memorable, though never less than very good. No cause for complaint at all.
Alot of people seem to eat in their villas so the restuarants all felt too empty and a bit devoid of atmosphere . Not sure there's much they can do about this, i guess it tends to happen in villa styled resorts like this.
Too many families with very young childfren dominating the pool area for our taste for the first few days, but it seemed to be due to families coming for Chinese New year and settled down to a more peaceful feel after that. We did enjoy releasing the lanterns over the sea after the New Year buffet evening.
We took a half day trip out to see the island highlights, good if you like photogenic temples, Buddhas, waterfalls, elephants, markets, all in one half day, then back to more relaxing by afternoon.
Overall it was absolutely lovely, very well managed and we loved it.
Room Tip: walking distances from beach and reception vary quite alot, so weigh up distance vs more privacy.
