“Villagg tal-Fanal made our holiday perfect!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2010

We spent a very relaxed two weeks in August-2010 at Villagg tal-Fanal.
Our overall review: our stay at Villagg tal-Fanal made our holiday perfect!

Gozitans are very welcoming and friendly. Gozo is an amazing place and you soon become accustomed to its relaxed pace of life. Villagg tal-Fanal provides the perfect stay if you want flexibility of a self-catering holiday.

We stayed in a very clean two-bedroom maisonette which was spacious with large kitchen diner, large lounge, family shower room and an on-suite bathroom. Outside, the private courtyard had patio chairs and table where our family could relax, sit and eat or simply listen to the distant church bells and chirping grasshoppers!
Staff were courteous and very helpful and during our stay all bed linen and towels were changed and accommodation cleaned, all with a friendly smile.
The complex has 26 apartments or maisonettes centred around a pool with sun loungers and shades. The Villagg was always clean and well maintained as was the pool clean and maintained with chlorinated water.

Gozo is a must visit destination. The Azure window has to be seen, especially in the evening for the spectacular sunset. There are many beautiful churches, Ta’ Pini and Victoria’s Citadel Catherdral to name a few. Ramla bay inspires with perfect sand and San Blas has its charm but prepare for the half mile descent to San Blas beach!
Car hire is a must if you want to go places on the island, although everywhere can be reached within a 15 minute journey!

Visit Gozo and stay at Villagg tal-Fanal - you’ll be pleased you did!

“Villagg tal-Fanal - Rural Retreat!”

We spent ten days at the Villagg tal-Fanal and found it an excellent place to stay with our young boys. The location is perfect for a relaxing and peaceful holiday. The accommodation is set around a central pool area that has plenty of shade and sun loungers and well maintained gardens. The accommodation is spacious with most having access to a private balcony/courtyard. The accommodation is reasonably well furnished, but could benefit from a few more kitchen utensils! Cleaning is carried out once a week, clean towels provided etc. You will need a car to explore the island and free underground parking is available at the complex. A small local supermarket provides all your basic requirements. Take a chance you will not be dissapointed. We would certainly return.

“Very Dated”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2010

The accommodation at Tal Fanal is very dated, we stayed in a ground floor one bedroom apartment. The bathroom did not have a proper shower just one of those hand held ones which rest on the taps. It was generally a very tired apartment which had seen better days. Our large terrace was filthy and with a couple of plastic chairs and a broken umbrella, it did not entice us at all. We had been given the minimum in kitchen utensils, several of which were rusty and only fit for the bin. Although not the fault of the village, our rubbish which was supposed to be collected every day was sometimes left for several days outside in the heat. Saw 4 cockroaches in the apartment which obviously wasn't a surprise considering the rubbish problem.

“Peace, quiet, fantastic scenery and people”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 June 2009

The Villagg Tal Fanal is a haven of peace and tranquility. During our stay in May 2009 there were only two other apartments occupied. We hardly ever saw anyone else, and if there were other people by the lovely pool, then they respected the nature of the place, so the only sounds you could hear were the birds and church bells in the distance.

The underground garage keeps your car cool and keeps the narrow village street clear of too many cars. A car is essential here, although there is a supermarket that stocks everything from fresh essentials to birthday cards in English a 10 minute walk away, to get further afield a car is very much required. There are several restaurants within a few minutes drive, in fact most of the island is within 20 minutes of the village. One bonus of driving in Gozo is we never had to pay for parking once! The main roads are generally fine, the minor roads are OK in most places but don't count on it, some of the roads are awful and should be negotiated with care, especially off the beaten track. The only petrol stations are located on the road between Victoria and Mgarr, although there is one near the citadel in Victoria on the road towards Gharb. The petrol station here is just a couple of attended pumps at the side of the road. I think all of the petrol stations are attended. We only used 10 Euro of fuel in a week, so don't fill it up too much or you wont get your moneys worth!

The roads around the village are quiet and there are some nice walks from the village. There are some stunning views, especially from the lighthouse and the citadel in Victoria. There is also a good view from the road that runs past the botanical garden in Nadur.

It is worth taking some of the minor roads as you get to see more of the everyday life, goats and horses being taken for a walk for example. Most of the main sights are sign posted but the sign posts tend to cater for people on the main roads.

We went to Valetta for a day out, took the ferry over and then caught the bus waiting at the ferry terminal. It took about an hour to get to the Valetta bus station, just outside the city gates. The cost was 58 cents each, each way. You have to buy a ferry ticket on the way back, there are timetables available at the ferry terminal

We ate at street side cafes, beach cafes and restaurants which were recommended and some that weren't. We didn't have a bad experience of any kind in any of them, all good food at the very least and generous portions!! Some restaurants weren't open or were only doing lunch or dinner due to the time of the year (early May) but there was still plenty of choice and they all did very good specials. Try the local specialties, if you like seafood you will love Gozo.
