This is my 2nd time in Bophut. The first being nearly 10 years ago. The village has expanded in that time but still has it's charm. Cheweng, though is a horror.
We chose Baan Bophut because it is small, avoids kids (nothing against them, but they tend to ruin the holidays of those who choose not to have them by screaming and running riot).
Most descriptions on TA are accurate and fair. On the plus side, the rooms are adequate and good value for money. The beds are indeed comfy, the AC system works well, and we got plenty of hot water when needed. The rooms are a bit souless and would easily be spruced up with local cheap artefacts. I didn't mind the bathroom wet room style but my wife was not that keen.
Breakfasts are good. We usually opted for the extras at a small cost. We didn't have dinner at the hotel because of the great choice of eats along the village beach road. We had lunch a few times, always Thai, and it was always good. The pool is small but adequate and well maintained. Great to cool off agter a hard afternoon reading a good book on the beach.
Some of the negatives, all insignificant considering the location and value for money .... The immediate beachfront is okay but could do with a regular cleaning, a bit too much dog poo for comfort. I think the same applies to most of the beach down to where the four star hotels start. The verandah furniture and sun loungers are a bit tired and the decking is rotting in a few places. There has been some mention of dogs in other reviews. Yes, the hotel has a dog and she's a real sweetie. However, there are alot of dogs in general in Bophut all owned it seems by local hotels, bars, and restaurants. All sem good natured but they can get lively at times and yes they poo on the beach and nobody seems to think it's their job to shift it.
Some great restaurants in Bophut, maybe a few too many. We recommend the BBQ steaks at The Shack, serving up ice cold Chang and succulent Aussie Black Angus beef. Something for every taste if you fancy a change from the cheap delicious Thai foods.
