“Back again to the Rocamar”

I have written a review for these apartments last year. My mum and I had a great time so we returned this year again. Seguro were on the news about their planes (skywings) running out of fuel etc..a week after we booked so we were quite nervous to say the least! Fortunately we didn`t have any problems with the flights at all but I cant speak for everyone at the place! Rocamar is still a lovely place to stay, but I`m a Puerto Rico fan. Some of the bottom apartments have been renovated with new bathrooms (which are beautiful) and with air conditioning in the living area AND bedroom area. (we had air con in the bedroom area but it only works when you shut the main doors!) Its a huge improvement though as it was unbearable without it. The towel wars were still taking place but while we were there rules were made so if you went down to the pool and all the sunbeds were taken but no-one was lying on them, you have the permission of the hotel to take the towels off and hand them into reception. It WAS getting a bit of a joke though! Food is bar food and cheap but you can come and go with the cook and order off the menu (e.g its fast food & breakfasts but he made a mixed salad for me). The weather was amazing... in the 90`s so beware! Mum and I had a few lovely meals. If you like Italian, you HAVE to go to Al Ponte in the centre commercial, its gorgeous. Oscars is really nice too, thats along beside Puerto Rico beach. We also liked Il pescador II for a juicy fillet steak! Amadores beach is worth going to, the sand doesn`t burn your feet which I was amazed by!! The Rocamar is still all Scottish holidaymakers so whether thats your cup of tea or not, its upto you. All in all, we had a lovely holiday and really enjoyed the Rocamar again.

  • Liked — the newly installed air conditioning and the weather of course!
  • Disliked — the 1 cockroach I saw & the loud teenagers that were staying.

“recommend it”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 August 2007

booked a last minute holiday for Puerto Rico to stay in the Puertomar apartments, when we arrived at Las Palmas Airport we were told we were overbooked and going to the Rocamar instead, all i can say is thank god very clean and had a ball our apartment was situated right at the pool, and pool bar! it was fab, we went to have a look at the Puertomar, very basic, old fashioned and no pool bar,

as said on previous reviews the only thing is the distance to the commercial or Europa centre, but i would recommend this to people of all ages, met some good friends out there aswell

  • Liked — service, internet service, pool side
  • Disliked — the air conditioning took alot of getting used to but once u knew what u had to do, everything was ok

“Excellent value for money!”

Hi all, just back from the Rocamar in Puerto Rico with my hubby and 13 yr old daughter (Fist time there), booked through Seguro and flew with Skywings form Prestwick. Flight time approx 4hrs and transfer times approx 30 min. Situated on the middle level of the island the rocamar overlooks the main commercial center and harbour (Great Views). All appartments have a pool view. I highly recommend this s/c accommodation. Although basic its very clean and the maids are in every day. Recent reviews stated there is no air con, however this has now been installed and for 10 euro you can hire the remote from the reception which is refundable on departure.(trust me this is needed) There are no kettles or toasters in the rooms. Again recent reviews stated you can hire them from the reception. When i went to get them there was no charge. Within the Rocamar there is everything you need. The shop is a little more expensive than the shops in the main commercial centre. However, for Approx 3 euro you can get a taxi outside the appartment within a couple of minutes. Would recommend you have the correct amount of money as the drivers will try to short change you. The Pool bar does really good food and is not to expensive. There is a happy hour from 3.30pm till 4.30 pm and 9pm till 10 pm. Local beer approx 2 euro 80 cents. Spirits like smirnoff are expensive approx 5 uero and vodka drinkers complained it was watered down. So be cautious. Stick to bottles or drink local spirits and beers. The staff are all great, very helpful and speak good English. There is a barbecue night with fun and games once a week at the pool bar (brilliant food, great laugh). surprisingly, even the main centre is very clean and has something for all ages. Watch out for the the blacks they try to sell you fake cheep sunglasses and watches. Your Rep will advise you of all the do's and donts on transfer so listen very carefully. Recommended restaurants, el Toro in the main centre and the Toro Bravo down by the harbour. The only down side is people trying to get you into their restaurants after youve eaten (it can be a bit much). I must say that if your Scottish and you want a break from the norm the Rocamar is NOT advisable as every single person there was Scottish. If on the other hand your ok with this, then this is the place to be. Oh, one last thing there is a no towel on sunbed policy implemented at the Rocamar pool which is not adhered to, so follow suit and get your towels down before 9am, or you have no chance of a bed. Hope this review is helpful, go and try it for yourself am sure you will love it , we did and cant fault it at all and will definitely go back in the future.

“Better than expected!”

This was my first time on Gran Canaria, but I have previously visited Lanzarote and stayed in similar self-catering accomodation. We booked the holiday through Seguro, and the price including transfers and booked flight seats came to around £260 for a week.
The Rocamar has a very good standard of accomodation, and was delighted to find out on arrival that Free Air Conditioning was available (subject to a refundable 10 Euro deposit for the remote). This is extremely rare in self-catering accomodation and certainly a welcome comfort (just remember to close your patio doors to activate the unit)!
Every apartment has a substantial balcony with great views of the harbour and surrounding area. The kitchen and bathroom were modern and fresh, and the standard of cleaning was excellent. My only slight grumble would be the quality of the beds, but the bedding itself was of a good standard. Each apartment has a large safe which can be hired for 10 Euros for the week.
The small Supermarket in the Rocamar is well stocked and the staff are friendly and helpful- often offering you the same goods that you had just purchased from them 5 minutes previously...
The pool was a little on the small side, but due to the small number of apartments overcrowding never became an issue. The pool bar is excellent, offering great food and drink from 9:30am through til dusk. My best bit of advice is to speak to Juan the barman, who actually rents the pool bar in the Rocamar- he also owns one of the best restaurants in the Commercial Centre- Mama Pinos and will gladly hand you a discount card for the restaurant. The food is fantastic and the staff do their best to make you have a good time.
The only negative I would say is the amount of steps up to the Rocamar, although this can easily be overcome by taking the many available Taxis that can be hailed on the street.
Puerto Rico itself is quieter than most of the resorts on the island, and does offer a mix of facilities for young and old alike.
Dont miss out on the Rocamar!

“Enjoyed the Rocamar - not so sure about the resort!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2006

The Rocamar apartments are clean, basic accommodation overlooking the main commercial centre in Puerto Rico. The rooms are spacious and equipped with a fridge, hotplates and cutlery/glasses etc. No kettle, but these can be hired from reception. Only the apartments at the end of each floor have windows in the bedrooms but fans can also be hired. The problem with keeping the bedroom window open was the racket from the commercial centre, which went on until 3.30am and caused us a few problems sleeping. Obviously if you're a party animal, you'll be out until the clubs shut so no problem! The apartment complex has a pool, but there can be a problem getting 'dibs' on a sunlounger - there was a lot of nonsense with people reserving sunbeds with towels in the morning then disappearing all day. This is allegedly against the rules, but no one does anything about it. Also the music by the pool was a bit too loud for relaxing. We solved this by going to the main beach at the resort, paying around 7(I think) euros for 2 beds and 2 umbrellas. There is a very nice beach called Amadores about 15 minutes walk from the main Puerto Rico beach but we didn't fancy the walk every day. You could always get a taxi though, as only around 3euros to most places.
The main commercial centre was a bit too 'full-on' for us entertainment wise - and you do get hassled a lot to go into the various bars/restaurants. We preferred the Europa Centre at the top of the hill past the Rocamar, where there are a couple of good restaurants. El Brassero and Bistro Frere were our favourites. We also ate down by the harbour at Caballito de la Mar and Oscars which were also excellent.
We struggled to find a bar we were comfy going to both afternoon and evening, but enjoyed Yates at the Europa during the day and also Oscars at the main centre. We didn't have a 'local' in the evenings as most places have entertainment of some sort and it depended on our mood what we fancied.
Also worth bearing in mind is that the resort is very hilly. Walking down is fine, but upwards is a bit of a challenge even for the reasonably fit! Luckily taxis are readily available and cheap.
On the whole, we enjoyed the weather and the friendly, hardworking staff at the Rocamar although we weren't keen on the resort and wouldn't return for that reason. It's not a place for a quiet holiday, but party people and clubbers will enjoy it.

  • Liked — High level of cleanliness and friendly helpful staff. Fun BBQ/karaoke on Thursday evenings.
  • Disliked — People doing the 'towel on the sunbed' trick and too much noise into the wee sma' hours
  • Tips/Secrets — Make sure you take advantage of the scales in the reception when leaving - it's easy to go over your 20kg baggage allowance!!
