“Ok with some reservations”

I returned from the ormos about 4 weeks ago.
The Hotel..Location. The location of the hotel is excellent and a few hundred metres from two good beaches. We arrived about 10pm and were shown to our room. The room we were shown to was awful and to be honest probably the worst we had ever stayed in. We went to find the rather brusque receptionist/waitress had now gone home. We decided to sleep there the night and sort it out in the morning. We went to the bar and the barman asked if we had just arrived and made us up a salad as we had missed the evening meal which was a nice touch. The following morning we went to reception saw the manager and she immediately without question offered us another room. The second room was much better clean large with a small kitchenette. The hotel offers a commanding view over the bay and is in excellent position, a short walk from the beach and nearby bars/restaurants. I would say you need to be fit as the steps down are very steep. The pool is small but never crowded with a great view. The bar is located at the end of the pool. It was relaxed and informal. The grounds of the hotel are pleasant and well looked after.
The food…. Not so good. Breakfast is cereal/meat slice cheese etc. Hard boiled eggs.
The juice is watered down not nice. There is little deviation from this.
The evening meal varied from ok to not good at all. Sometimes the meat/fish was well overcooked and dry. I am not a fussy eater at all so I did manage to find something. We were there for a week but if it had been longer I would have ate out the second week. The antics of the waitress was hilarious as was said before she is a cross between basil fawlty and manuel from fawlty towers. We found out she was working about 12-14hrs a day 7 days a week which explained why her customer services skills were so poor.
Bali….We had a car and visited a few places in crete but I felt that bali was one of the most picturesque. The small tavernas are all pleasant we used the posto , owner and his wife(I think) were fantastic hosts. We also used the pirate bar on the side of the bay. The two girls that run the bar(from Poland and slovakia sorry forgot your names) are very friendly and throw in lots of free crisps, shots etc. We went last week in July expected it to be busy but it was very quiet. Another word of advice there is one cashpoint and I was told it is always broken it certainly never worked while I was there. There is a travel office a short distance away we managed to change there but they charge a fee. The hotel may change if you see the manager but we couldn’t find her gave up.
To sum up the hotel is fine if you get a decent room so ask to change if you don’t. If you want a cheap 1 week break its ok as we paid about the same as for self catering so you can just eat out if you don’t fancy the food. Bali is a lovely area and the location is why I have given this 3stars. If I went back to crete again I think I would stay in Bali, but maybe look at other hotels and only stay at the Ormos if I had to. Don’t let this put you off if you can get cheap deal here it is worth it but maybe eat out.

“magnificent village, diabolical hotel”

Magnificent location and views BUT arrived 0330, no reception - just a key left on a stool with no directions to find apartment in pitch dark (they have several blocks). When we did find it, 2 beds made for 2 adults, but the 3rd bed, for 6 year old not made - still in it's sofa form so child had to sleep on sofa. Air con not on, so sweltering, sleepless night. Next day asked for 3rd bed to be made up, no apology and still no bed made. Did get air con remote on 4th time of asking (paid extra, but this is not unusual). No maid service on 1st day and still no bed made in spite of numerous requests - 2nd night for child on sofa, 3rd night, having asked several times during course of day, finally had 2 sheets delivered at 11pm (way after child's bedtime) by barman, who was the only member of staff left on premises. Owner goes at 3.30pm and closes reception. Hardly any staff - 2 surly restaurant workers who seem to work all day every day and 2 cleaners who may or may not visit your room and may or may not clean it if they do. 3rd bed often unmade. Room stank of damp, with visible damp and paint peeling in kitchen, bathroom and stair cupboard. Kitchen cupboards unusable as anything you put in them (including crockery) smelt/tasted of damp. Had to pay full day rate to keep room on until 2100 (we needed to leave at 2330) and then they tried to stop us having evening meal (which was our board basis) even though we'd only had 6 due to early hours arrival. Most surly and unhelpful staff ever. Wouldn't recommend my dog to stay here!

“Neverland”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 August 2007

Me and my fiancè arrived on 26th July in Bali by motorcycle. We immediately checked in and wented into our room. We had reserved a double one, but there were no more doble rooms available, so they gave us a studio. It was very large, refurbished and clean, with a very nice kitchenette, a large bathroom (even if the shower had no curtain), a wonderful balcony with two chairs and a table. Air conditining on request (5 € each day) .
Dinning area is the most beautiful I've ever seen in a hotel : obviously we cannot compare it with famous and luxury reseorts, but I can surely say that you could breath a good athmosphere. Firstly it is very quite, as the rest of the hotel and the village, wich are both choosed mainly by families and couples, secondly (and mainly) you have breakfast and dinner (but you can also stay there if you want to eat or drink something at the pool bar) in a very nice area near the pool and in high position, ideal to observe a wonderful landscape. Food is good and various, breakfast is complete, service is excellent and accompanied by kindness and smiles. The hill is covered by mediterranean vegetation and the hotel area is sorrounded by bloomed plants and trees. The village is 150 mt far and you can go there both by car or motorcicle or by feet, using stairs. I would like to come back, that's sure! Thank to all hotel's staff for making our holidays simply unforgettable!

“A Slice of Heaven in Bali, Crete”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 July 2007

My husband and I have just returned from a week's holiday in Bali Crete, (06/07/076) where we stayed at the Ormos Atalia Aparthotel on a half board basis. I must add, we purposely booked our holiday ten days before the schools broke up for holidays so were not there in peak season.

We were looking for an inexpensive holiday, surrounded by peace and tranquility, hot sun, clear blue sea, sea views, greek food, and as little commercialism as possible. I am happy to say we found it in the beautiful hillside resort that was the Ormos Atalia in Bali.
We called it a slice of heaven because for us it was idyllic. We didn't want luxury, and all the mod cons, but wanted to feel that we were surrounded by anything that represented Greece and it's culture, and we were not dissappointed.

The studio accommodation given us when we arrived was not as requested and frankly unacceptable under the circumstances, but was soon changed to what we were originally expecting and it was superb. Large clean serviced room, shuttered windows offering sea views on both sides, balcony with amazing sea views, kitchenette , and shower, basin and toilet in the bathroom.

Breakfast and supper were served buffet style in the dining area around the pool and bar. Very pretty area, with sea views, and a lovely sized swimming pool. Food was served Greek style and was basic but plentiful. Lovely selection of fresh breads, cheeses, salads, and an assortment of hot dishes for both meals. We found it quite easy to survive on just the two meals every day.

The walk to the Evita Beach below took us five minutes downhill, but was steep on the homeward journey. So be warned, you must have a certain degree of mobility and fitness otherwise, you could find it unpleasant. However, once on the beach, there are few on Crete to beat it for crystal waters, safe swimming and protected from the wind. The two tavernas there serve wonderful food at reasonable prices and the Greek gentleman who has run the main taverna overlooking Evita Beach for the last twenty years is the most charming host.

All in all, we found the local people very friendly, and hospitable, and we achieved the purpose of our holiday, which was just to relax and destress. However, we are already planning when we are going to return. It could be an annual pilgrimage!

Happy holidays.

“Some Good, Some not so”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2006

My wife & I stayed at the Ormos Atalia during the middle two weeks of October
Unfortunately the first ten days of our stay were the worst Crete has experienced since Noah.
This hotel is sited right at the end of the village of Bali at the top of a hill and is definitely not suited to those with any walking difficulties. The hundreds of steps needed to reach the harbour were not lit and were very dangerous.
Also at this time of year many of the local restaurants, cafes and bars were being closed for end of season. There was a road train which toured the village but this was also stopped during our stay. It took a good mile of up and down walking to reach the bus stop on the national highway so the road train was definitely missed.
We hired a car to get around the island (nothing else to do in the rain). If you do the same don’t worry about car insurance, increase your life insurance. The concept of double white lines and not overtaking on blind corners has yet to reach Crete. The aftermath of many accidents was evident.
The Hotel itself was very nicely laid out with apartments and studios all on different levels and the patios beautifully decorated with numerous cacti and bougainvillea.
We had a studio but as we were on half board we did not use the basic cooking tackle.
The room had no extras, i.e. no TV, radio or heater but was equipped with aircon. It was not needed during our stay. The mattresses were rock hard.
My main complaint is that the bins were not always emptied every day (and you know what is in the bins in Greek toilets)
The food and restaurant was acceptable but not special. It paid to be early for meals or most would already be inside German stomachs.
The best thing about the bar/restaurant was Lahki the barman who gave the impression of being rather dour but really had a great sense of humour and for regulars was generous with the raki ,ouzo and Metaxa..
The pool area did not seem large enough for a full hotel but Bali has a choice of four lovely beaches the one down to the left of the Hotel being the best.
Overall the hotel was excellent value for money.
Would I re-visit - No!
I don’t want to go anywhere where the weather is worse than England.
