Lovely location, in an olive grove about 5 km outside Georgioupoli, on the edge of Asprouliani, set back from the noisy coast road (on the Episcopi road) an easy walk to Kavros and a longer (3km) walk to Kournas Lake. Four of us (2 couples) stayed here in June 2007 and we all loved it (website at www.vardis-apts.gr ).
The pool is just the right size for the 55 studios & apartments, never too busy and always spotlessly clean with plenty of sunbeds and parasols. The staff were always friendly and helpful.
We stayed bed & breakfast, and generally ate out at tavernas in either walking into Kavros or driving into Georgioupoli, but tried the hotel restaurant (a la carte) one evening which provided good food and good value (though Cretan Speciality dishes had to be pre-ordered, as did the half-board buffet); breakfast comprised a more than adequate cold buffet, with cereals, juices, yoghurt, fruit, cheeses, cold meats, bread & coffee etc.
Rooms were generously sized with balcony; ours had a garden view (as requested) and looked out over olive trees with peaceful mountain backdrop). It also had a sink, refrigerator, 2 ring hob and bathroom with bath, shower and even a shower curtain ! Maid service was daily.
If you want a luxurious beach holiday with on-site entertainment, then this is not for you, but if you want a quiet, clean base for touring Western Crete with a pool you can laze around or dive into after a hot day, then we would thoroughly recommend Vardis Hotel & Apartments.
