“Lovely Chateau, memorable D-Day tour!”

My wife, grown son & I spent two nights in Roel & Pia's lovely home, and took the full-day tour with Roel of Victorytours.com.
The chateau is beautiful and peaceful, a bit off the beaten path but a nice change from Paris. The bed was comfy and breakfast was wonderful. Roel's knowledge and insight into the places we visited on his tour really made the history of that fateful day in 1944 come alive. Included in the full-day tour is a stop at an isolated church that served as an aid station for the 82nd Airborne on the eve of D-Day, a sight that is not in any of the literature about the area that I've read. Thanks to Roel for a memorable experience, and thanks to him & Pia for a lovely stay in their chateau.

“Best choice for Normandy”

We spent 3 wonderful nights at Chateau de Lignerolles. Roel and Pia were the most gracious of hosts. The Chateau has to be seen to be believed!

The room was spacious, beautifully furnished, and comfortable. Pia's breakfast was topped only by her warmth and hospitality. Roel has forgotten more about D-Day than most Ph.D professors in history will ever learn. We signed up for his full day tour, and it was an unforgettable experience. A master storyteller, he brings history alive.

We hope to return someday...

“Could not have been any better!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 June 2007

Our family of five (2 parents, 2 teens, 1 twenty something) just spent two nights with Roel and Pia at their beautiful chateau. It could not have been any nicer. The accommodations were excellent, the food at breakfast wonderful (all the coffee you wanted!), and the hosts were most attentive! Pia even turned on the bedwarmers for us one evening before we got in when the weather turned quite chilly. The setting (especially after the hustle and bustle of Paris for a week) was calm, serene, and quite beautiful. We spent several hours on the Victory Tour of the some of the WWII sights with Roel. He even kept our 14 yo interested! Roel gave us excellent directions and we had no trouble at all reaching the chateau from the train station in Caen. No way at all (IMO) can you go wrong staying with this lovely couple in their 1731 chateau!

“Fantastic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2006

My grandson and I just returned from staying at the Chateau with Pia and Roul and going on the one day tour with him and another couple who also were staying at the Chateau. We had a wonderful time. Pia is the gracious hostess and Roul is the tour guide for sure. The chateau was built in 1731 and is simply beautiful. It was cold, but the room was warm and beds were comfortable and full of covers and an electric blanket under the sheet. They made reservati\ons for us at Le Rapier in Bayeux for dinner and the food was fantastic. Roul took us to a place for picnic type lunch during the tour that baked its own bread. Tour was fantastic and we learned so much that you wouldn't get otherwise and very tailored to us and the other couple. Just don't ask Roul about the cows. He knew everything elso about the invasion. Took us to this beautiful 1000 year old church where the Band of Brothers spent the night after parachuting in and we saw the beautiful stained glass windows and plaque naming it for Toccoa. Not on the list, but on the way and part of the story that is not told in the book, or movie. We had to leave to go back to paris and Roul had shown us where to park right by the rental car place (which he had made arrangements for us before we got there) and took us back there after the tour. Easy on and Easy off. Such wonderful hosts, great food, excellent tour, fantastic location in the country side.

“Outstanding place to stay!”

In July we stayed at the Chateau de Lignerolles. What a beautiful place! The owners, Pia and Roel, were outstanding hosts. The room was lovely and clean. They had a fabulous breakfast with eggs, cheese, juice and meat and more--one of the best breakfasts we had in France. The coffee, too, was perfect (not too strong but just right). Roel is a font of information on WWII and landings at Normandy. We took his day long tour and it was great. He took us all over from Arromanches to Omaha Beach, Utah Beach, the bunkers where the Germans were shooting on the landings, the cemetary, Utah Beach, St. Mary de Eglise and so many other fascinating places. My husband, a WWII buff, is still talking of the tour today--we saw so much more than many of our friends who have gone. Although an emotional trip, Roel made it entertaining and enjoyable. Although they do not serve dinner at the chateau, Roel and Pia recommended fabulous restaurants--one that was a real jewel. Would give this a big thumbs up--wonderful place, wonderful hosts!
