La Closerie du Fronsac is a 350 year old house on a small vineyard that has been beautifully restored. We happened upon an ad for it in a locally published guide to the St. Emillion area. What good fortune on our part! Our room, booked at the last minute was charming, beautifully appointed, and very comfortable. Madame Aguerre, who personally oversaw restoration of the house and decorated it over a 20 year period, showed us the other rooms which are just as refined and as elegant as Madame herself. When we return we would love to stay in the Art Nouveau room, which is incredibly beautiful.
Breakfast is served in a lovely living area rich in restored timbers, beautiful furnishings and artwork. We ate one of the best baguettes we had tasted in our three weeks in France. We also took a walk along the quiet vineyard path just outside the door and bought a bottle of the lovely wine that we tasted.
La Closerie du Fronsac is located in St. Michel du Fronsac which is a quiet town about 12 minutes from St. Emillion; you have the proximity without the crowds. It is also just outside of Libourne and the TGV to Paris which was important to us. We did not want to drive into Bordeaux to return our car and catch the train.
My husband and I have been to France a number of times. We would most certainly want to make a visit to La Closerie du Fronsac again in the future. For us it was a glimpse into the timeless elegance, dignity, and character of France.
