“A peaceful and friendly stay”

We stayed for three nights with Ian and Miguel in May 2011 and could easily have stayed longer. This is a real gem in a friendly small French town well located to enable our self drive tour of the World War 1 battlefields. Our hosts could not do enough for us in terms of providing advice and also a wonderful French style breakfast in what can only be described as nouvelle art deco surroundings. Our room was large, comfortable clean and our every wish was met during our stay. They even installed a grassed area adjacent to our windows while we were staying there. Ian and Miguel were able to suggest two restaurants in Corbie for our first two nights and another in a nearby town for the third night. The last night selection was the best of the lot but the other suggestions were quite acceptable. We found it difficult to understand how Ian and Miguel can handle the pace of providing an apperitif and snacks in the beautiful courtyard garden and joining their visitors every evening before dinner. However, they managed the whole situation very well and never missed a beat! Another group of Australians and a very friendly English couple arrived the day after us, so our evening drinks that night went a little longer than planned with the result that we arrived back from the restaurant at about 13:00 but not a problem. If we ever return to this area, we will definitely stay here again.

“A little piece of paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2011

We actually stayed at Le Macassar last August, we arrived on our motorbike amid wind and rain on a Sunday afternoon having spent the day travelling across the Somme visiting a number of the battlefields and memorials - very atmospheric.

Nothing prepares you for the piece of paradise hidden behind the doors of an unassuming building front in a simple looking French town, it was almost like we had stepped into an oasis!

Ian greeted us with the tempting offer of cocktails or the opportunity of a hot bath - both very welcome after the cold wet journey we had endured. He showed us to our room which was breathtaking, beautifully decorated in Art Deco and the biggest room I have ever stayed in. The bathroom was similarly decorated with a massive freestanding bath with jets.

Once we had relaxed in the bath and changed into more appropriate clothing (less helmets and leathers - more maxi dresses) we joined all the other people who were staying at Le Macassar and met Miguel who along with Ian was our host for the evening.

We had the most amazing time, it was like having a dinner party with friends even though we had never met any of the guests before and I guess this is the very special thing about staying at Le Macassar, that it feels like a home from (a very beautiful) home.

The food and the company was fantastic and we stayed up far too late enjoying ourselves!

We will definitely revisit and recommend others to do so too!

“Great bolt hole from WW1 battle tours.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 November 2011

A bit hard to find- they keep it a bit of a secret. Location, even on the street front, is quiet. The Place de la Republique has a regular market day which is great. Nice little town- pleasant cafe over behind the church and a great restaurant in the next village (Ian will direct). There is also a terrific restaurant in Amiens (Ian again) which, when you get there you think you've come to the wrong place. Looks like a 2-star hotel lobby- but food is great.
Very handy place for WW1 touring- Corbie was a hospital town for the WW1 battles.

Room Tip: Hotel is stylish and rooms have great personality. It is only small so you can't go too far wron...

“A sanctuary amongst the WW1 battlefields”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 October 2011

Le Macassar was definitely a highlight of our two week road trip through France. Hidden behind its gates is an art deco paradise where you immediately feel at home. Evening drinks and a chat was a highlight for me. Ian and Miguel are great hosts and you won't be disappointed.

“'At home' at Le Macassar”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 October 2011

Le Macassar at Corbie in the Somme region of northern France is indeed an exotic treat. This glamorous B & B is well located for Australian visitors to the WWI battlefield sites at Le Hamel and Villers-Brettoneux. The accolades in other TripAdvisor reviews do justice to the luxury experience of Le Macassar and its beautifully designed surroundings. Ian and Miguel are warm and generous hosts who have created a consummate art deco interior which still manages to retain a sense of comfort and informality. Our room was large and beautifully appointed with five sets of French windows opening on to a terrace overlooking the courtyard garden. Fabric wall panels, matching soft furnishings in the bedroom and a spacious bathroom added to our comfort. Ian and Miguel offer guidance to historical and cultural sites in the region and to local restaurants. On Sunday evenings, when few restaurants are open, their hospitality extends to a hosted dinner for guests who wish to participate – a great opportunity to meet fellow travellers. Highly recommended for more than one night, in order to relish the experience.
