I can't believe the last review, where someone thought it is negative that grass grows on the roof. Friedenreich Hundertwassser, one of Austrias most famous architects designed this building and the grass is on purpose there. There are also trees going through the buildings! and it is just so amazing. Really like a fairytale. Unfortunately the staff is not too friendly, but i think that is the Austrian culture (I am Austrian myself :-))

  • Liked — the architecture
  • Disliked — the rude staff
  • Any tips/secrets for future travellers? — go there in summer on rainy days, you pay less than during winters

We stayed in the rogner for a week in july. when i arrived i was disapointed because eventhough the hotel is an amazing piece of architecture, there was grass growing from some of the roofs and it gave a bad impression, as if the place was not cared for.
I learned later that they left the grass grow wild because they wanted wild flowers on the roofs.

we were collected from the train station by the porter who was not over friendly. when we arrived the greeting from the reception was rather cold. We walked to our room which took an eternity approx 15 minutes from the reception area. if you have small children think twice. the room was disapointing because there was no air conditioning.

after we unpacked we went down to the pool area. i went to the bar to order a drink, again it was cold and unfriendly service.
my initial reaction was that the hotel was cold and sterile.
The people staying in the hotel did not add to the atmosphere.
absolutley no atmosphere in the bar, and the drinks were overpriced by austrian standards.

As the week went by the place grew on me. the pool areas are
amazing, and our children had a brillant time in the wave pool and vulkania. the size of the pools and the surrounding enviroment are first class. the people staying there were quite serious and if the children jumped into the pools they were not very happy. they would point to the board - springen verboten.
the germans and austrians love their regulations.???

the restaraunt served a good variety of food, the only problem was that the service was unprofessional, usually served by apprentices with no experience. our waitress actually told us one night that it was her first time to open a bottle of wine.however, the chefs were very kind to our children and made them pancakes and schnitzel when requested.

the hotel itself with its undulating surfaces and unusual tiles
and fantastic art work is really worth seeing. it really is unique and i am glad i visited, but i think a week was to long. our children aged 12 and 9 loved the place especially the wave pool.

the childrens club is poor. activities for 9 and 12 year old virtually non existent, and no effort by the staff to make our children welcome. the list of activities would be more suited to very young children, but if i had young kids i would be more inclined to stay in a kinder hotel such as the alpenrose in lermoos or the hagleitner in zell am zee. The rogner is not really suitable for children, but if you were staying a few days it would be fine.

If the rogner trained their staff properly and if there were a few more smiling faces it would make a huge difference to the place.

all in all i enjoyed my visit, but at the end of the day there are better places to stay in austria.

We stayed at Rogner Bad Blumau for 4 days recently. There are undeniably some strong points for this resort which are the location, the huge area dedicated to pools, beauty and health treatments as well as the architecture of the buildings. Everything seemed well looked after and clean. In nice weather, there are plenty of sunbeds outside, situated around the different pool areas. In bad weather, it is likely that the indoor spa/pool sections get very crowded. The previous reviewer commented on the nudist sauna area which is uncommon to non-continental Europeans. It is true that you'll be rebuked for not being naked which is not exactly guest-friendly. Apparently, they are ok when you wear a towel around you and appear to be naked underneath.

You'll find yourself in beautiful scenery, ideal for hiking, cycling or just taking a stroll around the tiny village Bad Blumau. Unless you plan to stay in the resort and village only, you should have some form of personal vehicle because public transport is limited.

Having said that, we did have some negative experiences while staying there. First of all, most staff seemed unpleasantly surprised to be confronted with hotel guests. Apart from the cleaning staff and rare exceptions, employees did not appear to be people persons. Simple requests seemed to irritate reception and restaurant staff, no one was unfriendly but we did not have the impression that they were enjoying their job very much. It seems that they operate with many apprentices who are not supervised adequately.
Also, you should be aware of the fact that this resort is a huge place. If you happen to have a room in one of the buildings that are seperate from the main building, be prepared to walk some distances (most passages are covered/withing the buildings) while you are there. The resort is designed to remind guests of a tree structure but this effort cannot disguise the sheer dimensions of the resort.
We apparently arrived with wrong expectations because we were reminded of a Club Med or Robinson atmosphere and did not really appreciate it. Lunch and dinner are served buffet style which strengthens that impression. The food variety looks big but to us the dishes seemed very repetetive after 2 days. There is one small restaurant that claims to be gourmet level, it's much calmer but of course you pay extra because only part of your full-board rate is transferred to this restaurant; we had one very good and one very average dinner there. They also run another restaurant (which does honest, traditional cooking) in the village and that's about the options you'll have.
As long as you don't mind a huge resort with all kinds of guests and staff that are certainly not 4-star compatible, you will surely be able to enjoy the place and the surroundings.

What I mean by surprising is that my party and myself were not prepared for the nudist sauna area. Maybe it is ignorance on our part but from reading the website before we travelled, I realised that there was a nudist sunbathing area which I presumed was outside but to our shock, we walked straight into the sauna area which is indoors. We soon got used of the idea and decided to use a sauna that was empty, very quickly we were approached by a member of staff who asked us to remove our swimwear, as it was compulsory to enter the saunas in the nude. We didn't do this and had to leave the area. We also tried to take part in a relaxing session in the biosaunarium and we were told it was fully booked, it wasn't but again I think this was because we were not nude!

This would be my main gripe with this resort, I know that it is quite normal to some Europeans to walk around in the nude but if this is not your cup of tea, I think you should not be discriminated against. We did not visit the sauna area again as we did not want to be embarrassed or made to feel like the odd ones out.

Apart from that, we stayed in a "Steinhaus" suite, which was very clean and roomy. It was a little bit of a walk to the restaurant and baths etc but I thought this was a good thing as you get your daily exercise!!

The staff, food & pools were nice and in general they try to speak English to you if needed.

We ordered a pick-up from the airport and thankfully the guy was there to meet us as we arrived and our departure from the hotel was prompt.

I ordered a birthday cake for a member of our group, which never arrived, this was disappointing as I had already ordered this prior to our arrival.

We had various treatments in the beauty and health centres, which were pure bliss.

Jus another word of caution, do not stay in the outdoor pools too long, I splashed the water on my eyes and had a very bad reaction, the salt from the pool completely dried my skin and this was very painful.

A few tips would be to bring plenty of moisturiser and hair conditioner (again the salt will dry your hair out), sunglasses, as the reflection from the pool is intense on sunny days.

Overall, we had a very relaxing weekend and I would recommend this place. Enjoy!!!

I honestly can't stop raving about this place. It looks awesome, the food and wine are amazing, the hot spings are blissful (there are two water sources from what i understand), the people were absolutely lovely (and exceptionally patient as I don't exactly speak German). I highly recommend any treatments - I had two different massages in the three days I spent there and both were unlike anything I have ever had before. The waiting room in the treatment area was gorgeous - dramatic and serene! It was all about the little touches in this place - the details were all there. I had a magical three nights in this place. I would defintley go back and stay for at least 5 next time - three days is about what you need to just chill out completely - after that I would have liked to go exploring in the forests or little towns near by. I didn't have a problem at all getting around - once you have your bearings it's all mapped out incredibly well.
