Having stayed in the Pestana Chelsea Bridge Hotel last year I was delighted to get an email advertising a 4 star Hotel room for 4 half board for £110 a night. Having read "the worst hotel in 10 years" review I was not expecting as nice a stay as the Chelsea Bridge but trip advisor is opinion based and I would like to encourage anyone to visit this hotel at this price.
It is a 4 star hotel not a top end 5 star hotel so you have to wonder what some people are comparing it to. The hotel is less than 3km from the Sintra boundary but yes about 7km from the centre of the historic town. The location is a bit odd on a street of villas around the corner from offices etc. Therefore a car is essential, with a car you can get to Sintra Palaces, Mourish Castle, Lisbon, Estoril, Cinemas, shopping malls, huge supermarkets, Cascais and numerous beaches all in under 30 minutes some less than 5 minutes. So in essence we found the location ideal as we only spent £35 in diesel all week visiting a different beach everyday, Sintra Palaces, Benfica FC, Lisbon day trip, Cascais and Estoril.
The room itself was very clean, didn't smell of chlorine, had a great kitchenette, was cleaned daily (even patio windows were cleaned daily, all dishes done as well). The 4 person rooms have a great duplex bedroom with high ceilings a queen size bed, plenty of storage and all furniture to a high standard. The bathroom was spotless and we had aircon throughout. A great skylight allowing us to electronically open the blinds from our bedside control to check out the clear blue skies in the morning and stars at night.
The outside pool is cleansed and checked daily with the ph, chlorine and temperature noted. It has a well established pool garden area with a pagoda and good quality sun beds etc. I spotted a gardener on 3 occasions keeping up the Arabic star theme of the bushes etc.
Indoor the pool is great and clean with some relaxing features, unltd use of steam room, sauna and gym where there is never a queue for the good quality "technogym" equipment. My wife had a great aromatherapy session for 40 Euros in the numerous treatment rooms.
The restaurant is a buffet and the breakfast was continental i.e. no English sausage, bacon and fried egg. However there was plenty of choice to be had. For evening meals we ate here 6 nights as it was good value and the kids enjoyed the banter with Louis the waiter who ensured we would not lift a finger. He took great pleasure in supersizing the kids deserts and the kids were disappointed they never got to say a proper goodbye to him.
The soup was great, the main courses were varied with fish being popular for obvious reasons, steak and egg was lovely along with, kebabs, lasagne and cod being my favourites meaning that I always left the restaurant full due to the choices. Lets face it when you get a free upgrade during school holidays worth £400 how can you complain? Also with the amount we ate had we replicated that in the restaurants on in estoril and cascais we are talking £800 for a family of 4 - 4 course meal.
I am angry that I nearly cancelled this hotel booking on the back of 1 bad review as we would have missed out on a great week that has made us look to stay with Pestana next year again but perhaps at a more expensive hotel such as 19th July 2011
If you are used to top end 5 star hotels or £200+ a night rooms then avoid, if you want a great all round hotel then book now.
