“Awww Taj !”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

At the outset, let me say, I have been always been in awe of the 'Taj Group' given that they are known to be India's best, when it comes to 'Service attitude'. I haven't been fortunate to visit their properties but had the good fortune of visiting the 'Taj Exotica' in Goa, about 6 years ago.
Taj-Fort Aguada, is definitely great it terms of its location and continues to be the pride of Goa, in terms of its sheer name. To start with, i had quoted arrival time on my request done via Agoda.com as 1400 hours, however travel plans changed and i called up the hotel about 1030 hours mentioning an early arrival (around 1300 hours), and agreed to wait a little until the scheduled arrival time at 1400 hours.
We arrived at around 1330 hours, but we were informed that the rooms were being tidied up, so we went in for lunch at Morisco's, while they would get back to us. Finally the front desk staff member did come up to the restuarant to hand us the keys, 45 minutes later than the requested check in time (1445 hours). I expected better from the Taj, considering the request was made as early as Dec 2011. Apologies don't work when it comes to honoring time for a brand like Taj, which i personally dislike, as worldwide, we are considered a country which does not honour time. I expect a brand like Taj, do overshadow such claims.

The room type was a Superior Charm room, with Sea View and with sit out. No sign of any sit-out in Room 226, which we were staying in. We were arriving from the Konkan by road (an almost 2 1/2 hour drive) and just wanted to rest, so we just made no noise of it.Frequent power trips, more to do with the state than the Hotel itself.
The Wi-Fi had difficulties getting logged on to, almost half an hour after check in, looks like we were not registered in the system because it automatically got latched on, a few minutes after i called up the front desk. However worth mentioning that the connection is very poor with i-PAD, could only manage to get and stay connected with my laptop, as the connection with the i-PAD was very poor in most parts of the room and frequently disconnected. Another point worth mentioning, I have had the good fortune of visiting bigger and smaller hotels in various countries worldwide where Wi-fi is complimentary atleast in the lobby, and expected my own country's flagship Hotel to have atleast free Wi-Fi in the lobby area but alas! atleast considering we are one of the world's best when it comes to telephony and networking.

Rooms quality was ok but the fittings in the bathroom were quite dissapointing, shower taps very old, but still worked although no markings for Hot/cold water and you ended up moving the knobs to the left end to get some hot water, so no major complaints but expected better. Markings on the wall, but why not go for something simple like 'Red for hot', 'blue for cold', done as a basic on the taps itself in even 3 star hotels in other parts of the world.
We dined at the Morisco's and Latitude. Morisco's was ok, pricey but then we just wanted to have a bite while we waited for the check in. Latitude was the other restuarant, again good but one of the dishes we tried (Mutton Sukka) was dissapointing. The staff was very kind to come over and take the feedback though, full points on that. Very surprising that the dishes do not indicate the spice level on each dish. I expected that to be more evident on a 'Taj' continental restuarant. But overall good, infact we did order room service from here again and the staff was keen to have our feedback. Another thing i noticed was inadequate coordination between staff. One waiter would come in and take the order and another come in and ask the same question again.
Just one thing i've noticed here, and its probably to do more with an attempt to make people more comfortable but at any point of time, more staff around than guests. Just looks more chaotic. Another point worth mentioning, staff often ask the guest for security reasons when arriving at the main entrance gates or the exit to the fort ramparts for room number details, but have not seen them asking for any verification. I would understand this is more to do with, ensuring guests do not feel unwelcome or offended, however considering it is a security measure i would expect them to be more stringent on this, rather than making it a 'mechanical exercise'.
So overall i'd rate the experience as average. its just probably i expected a lot from the Taj, whom as i mentioned before, i just have great regard for, considering it is symbolic and India's premier outfit when it comes to the Service&Hospitality departments. It just fell a little short of me saying 'Wah Taj' !
I expected them to treat all guests whether reserved directly with the hotel or via sites like Agoda.com (purely for convenience reasons) the same considering our legacy as a nation of being hospital to all. However considering that requirements on the request - check in time and 'missing sit out' in the Superior charm room , serve as an unpleasant memory. I do have more pleasant recollections of Taj Exotica, 6 years ago.
On the positive note, great location, great views and definitely pleasant on the eyes when you seat yourself in the lobby and face the Arabian sea.
A long awaited experience feel short of 'expectations', i took for granted on a stay at the Taj !
Hope they will use the feedback to make another visit more memorable and make other visitors more welcome. I would rather choose another property the next time around.

Room Tip: Hard to say because we did not get what we requested for.

“Lovely and relaxing holiday..”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

Stayed at this hotel with my wife and 3 year old daughter for 3 days. The trip from the airport to the hotel itself was very tiring and we got further delayed as there was a fallen tree on the main road. The coach driver tried to go through another road but as it was very narrow the coach got stuck and had to reverse back to reach the original route. The staff at the hotel were excellent. The check in process was very good as the staff did all the paperwork while we had our welcome drink. The food at Latitude was very good. Sea food at Morisco is good but a bit pricey. Enjoyed the drinks and food facing the sea at the sfx bar. I must say that there is not much childrens activities and some were at the sister hotel - Taj Holiday village, next door. The pool temperature always felt cold especially with the constant breeze from the sea. The hotel does not have its own beach area and the fort area in front of the hotel got very crowded with local tourists over the weekend. There is a small stretch of beach in front of the hotel but not very safe with little children as there are a lot of rocks and boats and water scooters constantly come on to the shore. The staff organised a car for us and we were dropped at the Taj Holiday village nearby which has a better beach area. Overall we had a very good experience and our room on the south side was much quieter and had better views of the sea.

Room Tip: Rooms on the south side have better sea view and are quieter. Latitude gets crowded by 9 am for brea...

“A hotel with great service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

Having just returned from a 2 week holiday at this hotel. The hotel is set in wonderful gardens and along with it's sister resort provide a wide range of services. The staff are absolutely wonderful, everyone from the waitng staff, the pool staff, the housekeeping staff, in fact we used to phone for an ice bucket in the evening to have a pre-dinner drink after few days they turned up without prompting. I would like to make special mention about the security staff as I have never come across a more polite and friendly people.

On the negative the price of any extras is high, when you consider the costs outside.

Tip: Use the taxis outside the gate, but be aware on longer trips there is a differnt price if you want the aircon on so open the winos

“Lot's of character, big rooms, relaxing...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

After a really stressful journey into Goa (flight to Mumbai, delayed internal flight to Goa, 80 minute coach to resort) the calmness and serenity of this resort is what struck me first. Quiet, calm, lots of staff on hand, sound of the sea - just as well, considering my stress levels from the journey! The lobby (important to me and my family as the first impression) establishes the hotel as having character and not your standard corporate chain (Marriott, Hyatt, etc) and this was a very welcome change. It has the ambience and charm of an old European colonial hotel or staging post. Some sympathetic art and artefacts reflecting the romantic Portuguese 'Age of Discovery' period of the 15th Century. You can feel the presence of the great explorer Vasco de Gama (who was also once the Governor of Portuguese India!)! This might be due to the fantastic muriel on the wall of the staircase going down to the pool and restaurant. Also, the hotel is set in an old fortress area with a bastion jutting out to sea. The room was a fabulously spacious suite with huge terrace overlooking the grass area and the sea. The restaurant was limited but with a wealth of fantastic dining options within a taxi ride this really isn't a problem. The pool is small and rather basic. The beach is also fairly limited and not as pretty/idyllic as your Seychelles, Phuket, etc but, again, there are plenty of other uniques in this resort and area to make up for this. The food in this region is totally fabulous and there is lot's of good value to be had. All of this said, I probably would not return for these simple reasons; the pain and stress of getting here logistically means I personally would definitely stick with the resorts of South East Asia (Thailand, Indonesia, Brunei, Malaysia). However, if you can handle the journey, this is a very different experience with a unique Portuguese/European/Indian/Tropical feel to it and I would recommend a visit (subject to the logistics!).
