“Wonderful Palace”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

We spent a night last month at the Samode Palace. It was a great experience with a wonderful setting, a large suite, the best restaurant we found in India. The only negative was that our suite looked out onto a cliff - but that did not matter as we only spent the hours of darkness in our room. Again the restaurant with nouvelle Indian cuisine was outstanding (certainly a three star Michelin equivalent) and the staff could not have been more helpful, taking us into the kitchen to help us choose among the dishes, as we were unfamiliar with several of them. This was a similar level of service that we found in all parts of the hotel. Again (as at Devi Garh, this is a hotel at which we regretted that we did not stay two nights. For more on the hotel see my wife's blog - gallivantingisadora.blogspot.com.

Room Tip: Ro!oms without a cliff view would be preferred

“Perfection but no lift!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

We stayed just one night on our Rajastan trip. The hotel was originally a palace of the Maharajah of Jaipur and I believe, still his property. The palace has been beautifully converted into a hotel with original features sympathetically retained and enhanced. We were fortunate to have a very good rom at the topof the building with a marvellous canopied bed and superb suite. But there is no lift.

The staff were all well trained and the service was perfact. We were given a very nice tour of the interesting parts of the palace. I have to say the lay-out is pretty confusing: not only were there several courtyards but they were often on diferent levels. And there is no lift.

For dinner, we took the fine dining room which was almost empty but where the food was quite the best we have found in India, extremely refined and beautifully spiced.

Breakfast was slightly disappointing, with a limited choice of fruit but the coffee was fine.

We were sorry to leave!

Room Tip: Go for the best!

“Royal Rajastan Treat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

It was a last minute decision we will never regret. This is a great breakaway destination from Delhi. The rooms are stunning, the service great. We had a great dinner in the restaurant attended by well trained staff and even a visit to the spotlessly clean kitchen. The quaint wine cellar had it's own surprises with a good selection of wines. This is a place you will not regret visiting.

Room Tip: Rooms on the mountainside are quieter. The rooms overlooking the entrance courtyard tend to be a bit...

I was staying in Delhi and drive out to samode for the last night.. It was a real nice break from Delhi. The hotel is peaceful and traditional. The infinity pool was the perfect place to relax and enjoy the serene views of the Jaipur region.

“Perfection”

Very little to fault. We wanted comfortable accommodation located within walking distance of a small untouristy town. This fitted the bill.

We were upgraded to the honeymoon suite which was lovely but I don’t doubt all the other rooms are just as nice. The whole operation had that feeling of quality and care.

Where we felt they may have made a mistake is in their new de-luxe restaurant. The reception had booked us a table for our first evening. When we saw the menu my wife said she’d like the chicken curry, but mild. They said the chef could not prepare a mild version that evening but that it would probably be possible the following evening. The room looks lovely – but it was not busy and they lost our custom by not being adaptable and responsive.

We immediately went to the simpler alternative restaurant where we had a far greater choice of dishes at almost half the price. It does not have quite the same atmosphere but the food and service could not be faulted.

Overall the service was perfect and it’s a lovely place to stay.
