We were picked up from the local railway station by a taxi booked by the Fort and the driver certainly took the rocky road. (Our own driver collected us at the end of the stay and found a road that was like a motorway by comparison). On arrival I joked that, with an approach road like the one we had seen, the Fort hardly needed walls for protection.
For all that the journey was more than worth it. The couple who own and run the Fort are charm personified and ideal hosts. We had a lovely room with, in addition to the normal bathroom, a bath on an outside terrace – sadly it was not warm enough to enjoy it in December but we did spend many hours on the terrace with our books.
Hot water bottles await you at bedtime – I’d forgotten how good they feel.
The food was excellent and varied. How pleasant to enjoy a sundowner by a log brazier outdoors and then dine in front of a log fire in the Dining Room.
The staff are courteous and willing. At times they need a bit of guidance. Our first gin and tonic was served in a half pint tumbler topped to the brim. Not quite Harry’s Bar style – but not a big mistake and the second was spot on!
There is luxury tented accommodation around the lawn. We stayed upstairs in the Fort itself but the tents looked great fun as an alternative. There are also lots of comfortable chairs on the lawn – for reading, chatting or just snoozing.
Nearby is a friendly little village which is a great place to spend a morning. Also nearby is a lake on which you can be taken out for a row and some spectacular bird watching.
A great spot with great hosts – who clearly care a lot about making sure you are totally contented.
Warning note. They don’t take credit cards –but do accept UK pounds.
