“An interesting experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 April 2010

This was our third cooking holiday we have taken and whilst the food was excellent we would not recommend this as hands on cookery experience. We were obliged to watch a rather disorganised preparation of meals in which we took very little part which was extremely disappointing as we could have gained the same experience from following a recipe.
The holiday was billed as being sustainable and eco-friendly and whilst we wholeheartedly embrace this philosophy, their sustainable way of life bordered on mean. One small fridge, no cold water of ice available, difficult when one member of the party is teetotal. The bedrooms had little natural light and the artificial lighting was extremely poor. It was virtually impossible to read outside on the terrace in the evening as the lighting was also inadequate and seating uncomfortable. Had the rooms all been occupied there would not have been enough seating.
The surrounding countryside is attractive and well worth exploring. The Finca provided a good base for exploring but in very Spartan conditions. We cannot comment on the pool as it was out of order when we were staying there. But we would not recommend it as a cookery holiday for those who are good cooks.

This review was made in April 2010 and they stayed in October 2009. Also I must emphasize that this review refers to our cooking holiday not the regular accommodation at Finca al-manzil but I strongly object to every criticism .The pool was not out of order at all, why would they say that? Please see photos of pool which were in fact taken last October. A small fridge?? A normal large fridge with plenty of ice and space for guests to store their own choice of drinks......I went out of my way to provide the daughter with different natural juices in place of the wine which is provided for meals. Now one thing I simply can't understand is the comment about little natural light in the bedrooms, they have french windows out on to the porch AND a big window facing the mountain as well, all made of seasoned chestnut wood with solid shutters, lovely. Uncomfortable and inadequate seating on porch? A choice of 4 relaxing reclined chairs with cushions AND a comfy sofa with cushions (see photos) + the huge sitting room with sofas and arm chairs AND another terrrace at the back with 4 easy chairs. Lighting is all eco friendly so starts dim but is bright after few seconds, the porch lights are not bright on purpose for a good atmosphere but on request I provided this client with a super modern anglepoise lamp so that she could read at night on the porch. Lights in bedrooms are perfectly adequate for reading, have never had a complaint. She does not mention anything about the excursions we make as part of the cooking course which everyone loves but she and daughter were really not interested in the cultural side of things which is an important back up to the cooking, especially the Iberic cuisine. As to the cooking, it is supposed to be an introduction to Moroccan, Middle Eastern and Iberic cuisine which I am enthusiastic about and have pleny of personal experience, it is not an intensive course, it's supposed to be fun and experimental, I have adapted and experimented with many of the recipes to achieve interesting and delicious results with simplified methods, impossible to find these recipes in a book!!! I was shocked when the daughter said she didn't like garlic!!!! Considering we get through kilos of it for all these cuisines, neither did she mention the many ingredients and utensils that she was not familiar with which I have gone to considerable trouble to acquire. What a pity that these clients did not enjoy the cooking week despite admitting that the food was excellent.....surely the proof of the pudding is in the eating!!
This is the first negative comment I have ever received about the cooking weeks, usually people love the finca, the cooking and our excursions, we have fun............obviously not in this case but I will not change my approach to relaxed cooking , enjoyable lunches and dinners and fascinating tours of our 3 local world heritage towns, an enjoyable combination according to all my other charming clients.

“Heaven”

This was our second trip to this most tasteful bolthole near Montanchez. Once again the welcome was warm and our stay most enjoyable. It is a place where you can relax in the most beautiful surroundings and do as much or as little as you want. We did very little apart from sit by the pool looking out onto the mountains, the odd bit of walking when cool enough and a great deal of laughing. The rooms are very tastefully decorated and the house is full of personal objects making it a home from home. We liked it so much that we bought the finca across the track so keep looking here for our information when up and running!!

“Summer Splendour, Winter Woes”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 June 2007

I can imagine that warm Summer nights spent on the balcony watching the sunset would be very relaxing but the cold spell we encountered sent us scurrying inside for warmth. Unfortunately, the primative portable heating in the guest bedrooms and the rustic concrete floors and bathrooms meant we had a few very uncomfortable nights. Our space in the B&B wing during inclement weather was limited to the cold bedroom (no reading chairs) or the external balcony as access to the common area (the host's loungeroom which housed the open fireplace and eating area) was limited to times when they were present. Whilst it was asthetically pleasing, it was just impractical. If the hosts weren't home, you couldn't even make a cup of coffee.

That said, our hosts were hospitable and the surrounding countryside was magnificent; the old Roman road meandering up the hill towards Montanchez with its stone walls and olive groves was just a delight. The Mya restaurant in Montanchez (Korean) has great cuisine especially if you want a change from your Spanish diet. Whilst we agree with the other comments that the Finca is a good base to explore Caceres and Merida and that it has a certain charm, we would not recommend it during the cooler months of the year.

What a shame that these clients didn't get the best out of Finca al-manzil. Very odd that they made no mention of these complaints while here. The sitting room is always available and even in April the wood burning stove is alight in the evening, the day time temperatures in April are wonderfully warm and there is a wide, open porche outside the bedrooms to enjoy the sun in the afternoons, a perfect place to for a drink after a long hike in the mountains. In fact these clients enjoyed being in the sittingroom in the evenings and watched quite a few dvds and had dinner once during their stay. The rooms did not have central heating last April but will have it by end of January 2008, besides the heating there are still the super warm duvets. At least they admit that the atmosphere and situation of the finca are special.

“The total tranquility!”

Had a great few days staying at Finca al-manzil. Viewing sunsets or thunderstorms from the terrace is magical. Bird life spectacular, Eagle owl lurking in the crags. Great atmosphere and genial hosts , very helpful and generous. Good local restaurants and bars, all very friendly. Will return, definitely.
