“Inexpensive, best to have a car and not pristine anymore.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 March 2011

We stayed in the cottage which was a large, very basic room. Window in bath was broken and did not close so bugs came in. We had to keep the bath door closed all the time so the bath was not covered by the AC and so it was hot. Fodors and other reviews said it was "pristine" but we found it worn and not as attractive as the internet photos which must have been taken years ago. We also felt the inside lounge had seen better days and never went there. Breakfast was not as luscious as pictured either. For our two night stay to just do the Skyrail to Kuranda, we didn't have a car and had been told the bus service was adequate. However, bus service was very limited and we had to tell the bus drivers where the B&B was in the dark. We did not feel comfortable at the bus stop after dark either. Restaurant shown nearby was closed and for sale and no food was available on Monday night. Thank heaven we grabbed a Subway sandwich at the bus stop, just before the 6:30pm bus or we would have had to wait for the 8:30 bus. Without a car, better to stay in town.

“great breakfasts and homey roomy living space”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 February 2011

We very much enjoyed the home cooked breakfasts in the unique atmosphere of their breakfast nook with indoor lily pond! Pat and Mike were hospitable and shared good sightseeing advice when asked. They gave us lots of privacy when we didnt seek them out. We enjoyed the pool and the open space of our rooms on the upper floor which were air conditioned at night. We had kitchen area , Tv area with reference books on Australia's highlights and cd's if we wanted to play music. We had nice clean bathrooms and everything we needed. We stayed three or four nights and were happy throughout.

“Always feels like I am coming home!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 February 2011

I totally disagree with that ridiculous last review!! If you want 6 star then go to Versace and pay an arm and a leg for it!!!

Mike and Pat are warm and welcoming and bend over backwards to ensure your stay is pleasant.

I have been staying here on a regular basis for over one year now and I find it great value, in a great location close to shops and eating options and only a stones throw from the airport.
The lizards on the wall that were mentioned are harmless geckos that keep bugs away (get a grip whoever wrote that) - you will find these all over Cairns, the bedrooms are comfortable with their own bathroom, there is a spacious family room with dining table, kitchen facilities and a large wrap around verandah overlooking the pool.

I look forward to my next stay soon.

“Exaggerated description & too far from town”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 February 2011

If you want a cheap mattress and sheets (for a high price) with lizards on the wall and dog poop around the pool and mayonaise on your eggs benedict, you have found the place. Thank goodness we didn't follow the owner's advice and trade in snorkeling on the Barrier Reef to help her make money on a tourist bus to the rainforest. When it costs $50 taxi to stay here in the boondocks, you don't see any of the city and their lack on internet speed or tv channels makes it limited in pleasure.
There is only second floor accomodation and air conditioning only in bedroom. Owner charged more than originally quoted so beware. The owner said she was without a cleaning person and it sure showed in her own home downstairs. I was leary of the lizards falling from the ceiling & walls while I slept but people told me they were harmless. I sure wish she would have told me that. Cairns is not a cheap place to stay but I would never recommend this place unless you like roughing it.

Our mattresses are of commercial hotel standard, ie, Sealy Posturepedic . Our sheets are of similar quality, Actil, Sheridan, or Egyptian Cotton which are considered top of the range in Australia.

Just one of our breakfast choices is Eggs Benedict, and I can assure you it has never been served with mayonnaise, we only use Hollandaise. No, its not home made, we just don't have time at a busy breakfast with many other orders, it's an imported French brand.

Truly flabbergasted at the statement that I advised you to trade in a snorkelling trip for a rainforest trip "to make money" , as you might remember, the reef trip you asked me to book by email before your arrival was cancelled due to expected bad weather. ie, wind forecast of 30 plus knots. I was phoned by the reef operator you chose that your trip was cancelled and advised you quickly by email, and did suggest, as an alternative, an inland rainforest trip where weather isn't such an issue . It was unfortunate that you only had only allocated one full day in Cairns and there was no time allowance for a better weather day for reef.

As it eventuated, I did find you a reef trip that was prepared to go out, despite the weather, and drove you to the pick up point. I'm sorry that on your return you discovered some dog poop around the pool area, as indicated on our website we have two small dogs, we obviously do regularly clean up after them, but just sometimes something slips by.

There is absolutely nothing on our website to indicate we are in Cairns city, and answer to original booking enquiry would have also have stated that we are 8km out of city, although Stratford is hardly considered "the boondocks". A taxi from Cairns airport for two people to Lilybank is about $20-$25, this is far less than most local B&B's further out of town.

We have exactly the same wifi speed and TV programming as anywhere else in area, and we have installed satellite TV for our overseas guests so they can keep in touch with news and sports in their own countries.

No, there is not only second floor accommodation, there's a ground floor family room and a separate cottage. As described on website, and all bedrooms are airconditioned. It is very rare in FNQ for an entire house to be airconditioned, and this is an old Queenslander, with high ceilings, louvres, huge verandahs to catch tropical breezes.

Had you read your guests' information sheets in your room you would have been aware that geckoes are a harmless part of life here in the tropics, we have two alternatives to living with them which amount to poisoning them with chemicals , and thereby destroying all other native life, or throwing bleach over them, a cruel and slow death. We choose to live with them, like most residents of the area.

I've searched through my records and cannot find an overcharge on your quote, however if you care to point it out will be happy to refund you the difference. .

“Our comfortable home away from home for 2 weeks with fabulous breakfasts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 October 2010

We spent 2 weeks at Lilybank in September 2010 and had a wonderful stay. No wonder Frommers' travel guidebook rates it as one of the best B&B's in Australia! The Gardener's Cottage gave us privacy and a covered terrace, surrounded by beautiful garden flowers and singing Rainbow Lorikeets. Very comfortable beds, so nice and quiet at night, and we were able to do our own laundry on site. There's even a guest kitchen in the main house, which we used on several occasions. You won't find any of this at a hotel. It was our home away from home. Pat Woolford's cooked-to-order breakfasts were delicious and started off each day just right. She also booked our day tours to Daintree, Kuranda, and Atherton Tablelands and was invaluable as a local resource when we needed more information. She helped us make the most of our dream Australian vacation. Never needed a rental car -- tour buses picked us up right out front. We highly recommend Lilybank B&B. ~~ Highly recommended tours in the Cairns area: Cairns Discovery Tour (4 stars), Wait Awhile Rainforest Tour (5 stars -- best tour we took & best wildlife viewing), and Mike Ball's SPOILSPORT liveaboard dive trips (world class, 5++ star, fabulous diving, best crew in the business).
