This is the second WelcomHeritage hotel I've stayed in in Eastern India and both have been disappointing. I would describe this as a bed and breakfast and wonder if it would be better if it was family run. It is a lovely house with 5 spacious and beautiful bedrooms and a nice front porch for relaxing in the evenings. However, the house is simply not well maintained and not what I would expect from an ITC run facility. Unfortunately, it is not kept very clean. There are stains on some of the furniture. The bathroom towels are worn and stained. They try to be first class but don't quite make it. For example, while they use very nice china that must have belonged to the owner of the manor, they then mix in newer uninteresting serving ware ruining the effect of eating off old china. Service is average. We called ahead one day and ordered lunch since we were running late and had a very short time to eat - they forgot half the order. The food was so-so. We had sandwiches several days and the bread got more and more stale - made me wonder if they bought a fresh loaf on our first day and just used the same loaf through the entire stay. The Queen size bed was very comfortable, but unfortunately, the AC would run only if the voltage stabilizer ran and it was so loud I couldn't sleep. So, I turned off the AC and the room was stuffy. Unfortunately, there are no screens on the windows, so I couldn't open them for the cool night breeze without being attacked by mosquitoes. The house is also very noisy - I could hear everything my colleague said and did in the room next to me - and the kitchen staff were very noisy in the mornings. The grounds could be very nice but they are not well maintained. They are building a pool in the front of the manor that destroys the view from the porch. The worst surprise, however, was the 10% service charge - I've traveled a lot and rarely have I been billed by a hotel for a service charge. If the service had been great I would have been happy to pay; however, service was average. While I would have been happy staying here if it was described as a simple B&B and the price reflected it, for the price and with an ITC label, I expected much better. No more WelcomHotels for me.
