“The nicest hotel we stayed in... hidden gem”

Hello
I originally thought this hotel did not exist as I could not find any proper information on the web. I was wrong, and happy about it.

We had the pleasure to stay with my wife into this hotel, and from when we arrived until we left, we felt really well treated. The service is really good, and the views are amazing. Have a look at the pics we posted.
We STRONGLY recommend this hotel.

PROS
In the middle of nowhere (cons also)
Service
Cleanliness
Food (it tastes really good but it is a set menu)
Swimming pool
View of the lake and birds
Rooms

CONS
In the middle of nowhere (pros also)
Food (it tastes really good but it is a set menu, so not too much choice)

“Peace, Tranquility and Rest”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2009

Sardar Samand is Jodhpur's diamond. The rooms are well furnished spacious and very comfortable. As I was the only guest when I arrived I had the choice of any room that was not one of the Maharajah's.
The location and atmosphere are unmatched. You can watch the sun rise over the lake and set over the fields behind the hotel. As the road nearest the hotel is some distance and not greatly used the only disturbance to silence are the occasional sounds from the miriad of bird types in the area. To give an idea of the serenity of the place a peahen felt secure enough to lay her eggs in a small flower bed within 3 metres of the pool and would watch you from her nest as you walked past only a meter away.
The staff appear to come from families who have ofetn been in the Mharajah's service through generations. The service is excellent but most importantly genuinely warm, they want to welcome you and they take pride in the palace and working their.
When I visit India I always travel but leave four days at the end of the trip to recover so I return feeling I have had a holiday. I gambled on Sardar Sammand as got vey good deal with Asia Rooms and found the peace and tranquility.

“Best kept secret”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2009

I was a bit circumspect when i was booking the place. The pictures were non desriptive, the place was not known much and the drive was too much from delhi..........the palace is built in art deco style and the rooms are very good and spacious..it was built as a hunting lodge for the Mharaja and still serves like a retreat for the royal family..now let me come to the positives:

Great rooms
awesome views of the lake and forest around
Mysterious feel to the entire place
Pool side is awesome to relax and spend time with beers
serevice is great

The first night we were the only ones there and can you believe we checked out after 2 nights went to another hotel but came back to sardar samand for another 2 nights.....all i would say is that its a unique place....very comfortable and meant for people who want to do something different..cant wait to go back.

“A completely different Rajasthani palace experience”

Absolutely agree with the previous review – this place is extraordinary, and still a well kept secret. We were the only paying guests, the only other people a small party of the Jodhpur royal family (who own it) who were completely charming and made us feel like guests at a private house party! The place is a perfectly preserved Anglo-Indian Art Deco gem, complete with Bakelite ashtrays, Lloyd Loom chairs, hunting trophies, wind-up gramophones and piles of ancient board games. We really did expect an Indian version of Hercule Poirot to arrive at any moment . . .

Our room (poolside wing) though authentic was a tad tired looking but the sheer style of the experience as a whole made up for any shortcomings there. We stayed in beautiful heritage properties all over Rajasthan and tried to vary them in terms of scale, style and grandeur, but this place wins the prize for uniqueness. We got an excellent deal through Asia Rooms.

  • Liked — Perfectly preserved 1930s feel
  • Disliked — Slightly tired decor in our room

“Back to the future @ Sardar Samand Palace”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 February 2006

Sardar Samand Palace, located in the middle of the countryside but still quite close to Jodhpur ( about 1 h 1/2 by car), is probably the best kept secret of all the heritage hotels in the area ! This former hunting lodge was built completely in Art Deco Style in the 30's for the Maharaja Umaid Singh of Jodhpur.
Located in the middle of a huge property, the " lighthouse looking " main building ( where the private appartments of the royal family are located ) towers high above a huge lake cruised by a large variety of birds ( cranes, ducks, flamingos, kingfishers etc... ) There is a nature trail that goes downhill and follows the lake side. If you are a nature lover, Sardar Samand Palace is the perfect retreat for you ! Wildlife still abounds in the form of elusive Indian gazelles and blue cows. And the area is somehow reminiscent of some places in the Australian bush or East Africa. Staying there was, for me, like travelling back in time to some very happy childhood memories. The Art Deco furniture and decoration have been carefully kept and the atmosphere in this place is totally different from what you might expect in other hotels in India.
Here, you can really forget the rest of the World and be happy !
The staff is very helpfull, discreet and nice. They all went out of their way to make my stay one of the most enjoyable experiences ever ! Thank you !
